Daily Devo #11

Nahum
1:11 From you came one

who plotted evil against the LORD,

a worthless counselor.

v.9 asks, "What do you [plural] plot against the LORD?" Here, Nahum uses "you" [feminine singular] in the Hebrew which means he's speaking directly to the Assyrian capital city, Nineveh*. The "one who plotted evil" and the "worthless counselor" is a…

Daily Devo #10

Nahum
1:10 For they are like entangled thorns,

like drunkards as they drink;

they are consumed like stubble fully dried.

The theme in this verse is still the destruction/complete end (v. 9) of the Assyrians. Nahum uses great imagery in this single verse to describe how the Assyrians will be wiped out.

"Entangled thorns" gives one…

Daily Devo

Okay, so I've really been slacking lately. I need to confess that I haven't been spending adequate time with God like I should. Anyway, I hope to get the DAILY devos up and running smoothly again.

Daily Devo #9

Nahum
1:9 What do you plot against the LORD?

He will make a complete end;

trouble will not rise up a second time.

This verse is speaking directly and personally to Nineveh/the Assyrians living there. "Plot" speaks of computing or devising. "Against" is referring to motion or direction, not necessarily physical, of hostile character. So,…

Daily Devo #8

Nahum
1:8 But with an overflowing flood

He will make a complete end of the adversaries,

and will pursue His enemies

into darkness.

"Overflowing flood" reminded me of the flood in Genesis. A global flood destroyed all mankind and animal life besides what was on Noah's ark. Also, Nahum 2:6-8 give evidence that Nineveh was to be destroyed…

Daily Devo #7

Nahum
1:7 The LORD is good,

a stronghold in the day of trouble;

He knows those who take refuge in Him.

It's interesting to note that immediately after mentioning YHWH's wrath and anger, Nahum tells us YHWH is good. Wouldn't it seem that an angry wrathful God would be bad?

The question is often asked, "How can there be a good God if…

Daily Devo #6

Nahum
1:6 Who can stand before His indignation?

Who can endure the heat of His anger?

His wrath is poured out like fire,

and the rocks are broken into pieces by Him.

YHWH's wrath and anger are so great that not a soul can endure them. Christ did!

Fire is often used as a way of YHWH's presence manifesting...burning bush, pillar…

Daily Devo #5

Nahum
1:5 The mountains quake before Him;

the hills melt;

the earth heaves before Him,

the world and all who dwell in it.

An overwhelming tone of the chapter so far has been YHWH's sovereignty and power over what He created. All creation from the trees to the storms is in submission to its Creator. How humbling…

Daily Devo #4

Nahum
1:4 "He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;

He dries up all the rivers;

Bashan and Carmel wither,

the bloom of Lebanon withers.

Immediately after reading the first statement of this verse, my mind went to Mark 4:39. The disciples woke Jesus during a storm while they were in a boat. Jesus woke…

Reformation Day!!

Happy Reformation Day!!

October 31, 1517 was the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenburg. Thus began the Protestant Reformation! So, if you are a Christian of a denomination other than Roman Catholic, you can thank Luther for making that possible. I…

Daily Devo #3

Nahum

1:3 "The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His was is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet."

Verse two tells us that YHWH is avenging and wrathful, but verse 3 says He is also slow to anger. YHWH is "great in power," thus able to…

Daily Devo #2

Nahum

1:2 "The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries and keeps wrath for His enemies."

Aside from two introductory sentences in verse one, this book/Nahum's message opens by speaking of Yahweh's characteristics. Yahweh is jealous, avenging, wrathful, He takes…

Daily Devo #1

Nahum

1:1 "An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh."

There seems to be two separate intros here in the first verse, yet it seems a little redundant. The words oracle and vision are used, however, which make each… Continue

Daily Devo - Introduction

I have decided to start a blog about my daily devotions.

Every day I study my Bible and record insights and such. I go one

verse at a time through each book of the Bible. I just recently started the book of Nahum. I've been going through the Minor Prophets (Jonah, Amos, Obadiah, Micah, etc.). So, this is the beginning of something I hope to continue.

Feel…

Slack churches

I am so thankful God has provided a biblical church for my husband and me to go to each week. However, I know from experience that not many biblical churches exist. A famine has swept across America. A famine of God's Word being faithfully, honestly, joyfully preached and obeyed. America's situation is reminiscent of Amos' time in Amos 8:11.

Anyway, what I wanted to discuss was our problem with theology and doctrine.

No one wants to talk about it. I grew up in…
