Nahum
1:4 "He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
He dries up all the rivers;
Bashan and Carmel wither,
the bloom of Lebanon withers.
Immediately after reading the first statement of this verse, my mind went to Mark 4:39. The disciples woke Jesus during a storm while they were in a boat. Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind and told the sea to be still. In John 8, Christ claims to be YHWH, and this verse in Mark just solidifies that claim! Nahum is describing YHWH's power. YHWH is able to use nature and make it do what He wants. So is Jesus! Thus, we have more evidence of the fact that Jesus is fully man and fully YHWH.
Wither is used twice here. Repetition = importance. The Hebrew word is amal. It means to droop, be sick, or to mourn. YHWH can cause all the water to dry up and make the flowers droop and wither. Thanks be to God that He provides a lush and well-watered environment, because at any moment He could make that all go away.
