Nahum
1:10 For they are like entangled thorns,
like drunkards as they drink;
they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
The theme in this verse is still the destruction/complete end (v. 9) of the Assyrians. Nahum uses great imagery in this single verse to describe how the Assyrians will be wiped out.
"Entangled thorns" gives one the image of a thorny mass of vines. If you pull one vine of thorns from the brush, a whole clump comes out with it. If you were a farmer during Nahum's time, you would have understood this imagery. Farmers would clear their field of any thorns or weeds, and then burn them. Nahum is getting across the message that the Assyrians will be destroyed as a whole group like an entangled mass of thorns being thrown into the fire.
"Drunkards" is used to describe the Assyrians as well. A drunkard is entirely incoherent and unable to defend himself. The Assyrians will be like drunkards at the time of their destruction. YHWH is going to destroy them no matter what, so there's no defense they will be able to put up to thwart His plan. They are utterly defenseless.
Lastly, the imagery described is "stubble fully dried." This stubble is like dried out weeds and unwanted brush gathered from an area to be farmed. Much like if you were doing landscaping today, or pulling weeds from your garden. "Stubble" was gathered and dried out. Once it is fully dried, it is thrown into the fire. As you could imagine, it would be consumed very quickly. Thus is the fate of the Assyrians.
From this one verse we may gather that the Assyrians will be destroyed as a group, defenseless, and it will happen rather quickly.
