Nahum
1:2 "The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries and keeps wrath for His enemies."
Aside from two introductory sentences in verse one, this book/Nahum's message opens by speaking of Yahweh's characteristics. Yahweh is jealous, avenging, wrathful, He takes vengeance and keeps wrath for His enemies. Avenging is used twice here in verse two, and the root of the word used again as vengeance. Anything worth repeating must be important. Avenge is the Hebrew word naqam. It means to avenge, take vengeance, or punish. Naqam is used in Leviticus 19:18 where the law forbids personal vengeance, or holding a grudge against your neighbor. Naqam is explicitly reserved for Yahweh. Verse two is telling us that Yahweh, and Yahweh alone, punishes people. Also, Yahweh keeps, reserves, stores up wrath for His enemies. Scripture states in various places that no guilty person will go unpunished. Yahweh is keeping His wrath in store and reserves the right to punish people with it.
Praise God there is now no condemnation for those in Christ! He took the full wrath that was due me. Christ bore the punishment God had reserved for me.
Jesus paid it all.
All to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain.
He washed it white as snow.
Lord, now indeed I find Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper's spots and melt MY heart of stone.
