The Singapore Merlion - - - per Wiki it's a marketing tool to promote tourism and trade designed by Alec Fraser-Brunner in 1964.

 

The Merlion (Malay: Singa-Laut) is a marketing icon with the head of a lion and the

body of a fish, used as a mascot and national personification of Singapore.

Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea  and "lion".

The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it

was called Temasek,  which means "sea town" in Javanese.

The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura —

meaning "lion city" or "kota singa".

 

There are a total of 5 "officially recognized" merlion statues in Singapore, including the original 8.6 meter tall statue located in Merlion Park near the CBD and the 37- meter* tall gigantic replica at Sentosa Island which has two viewing decks for visitors - - the 9th story Mouth Gallery Viewing Deck and another on top of the head.  

 

* 37 meters is 127 feet (for those who don't do metric) or the height of a 12-story building
