Home of Rhett & Link fans - the Mythical Beasts!
Hello, Kommunity!
As you know, Rhett and Link recently announced that they are handing the keys of the Kommunity over to the Mythical Beasts as a fan-run social site. As a result, the moderators have been given much of the overhead control of administrative, technical, and general day-to-day upkeep on the Kommunity. In the days since their announcement, we have seen some confusion regarding how the Kommunity now functions and how this affects you as the members of the site.
Functionally, very little has changed. You’re all aware of the fact Rhett and Link haven’t been actively involved in the Kommunity for several years now—I don’t say that to throw them under the bus, but rather as a statement of reality. In Rhett and Link’s absence, the current moderators have been carrying much of the weight of the website since we were instated in February 2014. The fact Rhett and Link are handing the Kommunity to the Mythical Beasts is really only an official recognition of what we already knew: Rhett and Link don't have the free time to be fully in charge of the Kommunity—and they haven’t had that time for a while. The reality is that this official handover only means that the moderator system you are already familiar with will continue.
There are only TWO major changes that affect the membership:
ADMINISTRATION
Rhett and Link are not involved in overseeing the functioning of the website anymore. They have not permanently left the Kommunity, though! You can still find their official profiles here: Rhett, Link. As they have been doing for the past several years, they will continue to check in and post some things to the Kommunity whenever they can. Again, this is nothing new if you joined after 2013.
Long-time member and moderator Gumbo123 is now the only official administrator. He has been appointed by Rhett and Link and is now in charge of administering the back-end functions of the site, including technical malfunctions, membership management, and other duties. Gumbo should not be members' first point of contact for day-to-day issues around the Kommunity; rather, he is the point of escalation for the moderators to turn to if we need bigger tasks accomplished.
RULES
If you have been a member for a while, you know that we previously had a rule that banned all use of profanity on the site. With direction from Rhett and Link, and after lengthy discussions with them, we have relaxed that ban. The new rule reads as follows:
Refrain from excessive use of profane language. Any profanity used in a belligerent, threatening, harassing, or sexually explicit manner will be grounds for suspension.
Profanity used to harass or disrespect any Kommunity member is still against the rules. This DOES NOT open up the ability to troll and be rude to our members. The moderators are still here as a line of defense against any negative and harmful characters that try to disrupt the Kommunity environment.
We know that those of you in the chatroom have noticed an uptick in troll activity in the chat, which has created unhappiness and frustration -- but we can assure you that this is an unfortunate coincidence, and it is not due to the fact that ONE of our rules has changed. We sometimes see a burst of negative activity every now and then; this is just one of those times. Please exercise patience and continue to report disruptive members to us, as you have always done in the past.
If you ever have any questions about these changes to the Kommunity, or anything else, please ask a moderator! We are here to help, just as we have always been.
Sincerely,
Your K-Mods

Thanks for your reply Victoria! I am glad this site it moderated by some wonderful people. Keep up the great work!
Hi Lora Fay,
Thanks for your question. The moderators had been in discussions with Rhett and Link for a few weeks prior to the announcement regarding the future of the Kommunity, and the rule change was direct guidance from them. While understanding that many people watch GMM/R&L content with their children and that R&L fans can otherwise be quite young, it was not considered reasonable to require and enforce a total ban of profanity given that the Ning Terms of Services require members to be 13 years old in order to sign up, and that we do have a significant population of people from varying backgrounds and ideologies. The perspective is that it's not the words themselves that cause problems, but rather the way people use them—thus, we are still prohibiting belligerent and harassing uses of profanity.
I hope that answered your question!
Hello Victoria! First and foremost, I want to say thank you and the other moderators for making the Kommunity a safe place for my teen-age step-sons to visit. I also feel very comfortable when my 5 year old wants to click around and look at the Beast Kreations. I mean no disrespect in any way but maybe I am not understanding the update to the profanity rule. I don't see how a strict rule in regards to profanity is a bad thing and why the ban would be relaxed.
