Home of Rhett & Link fans - the Mythical Beasts!

Hello, My name is Justin and my best friend Rhett and I have been filming videos together for awhile now. I feel as most of our ideas are pretty solid and funny but we haven't uploaded a single video do to one very very unfortunate circumstance. NEITHER OF US CAN EDIT! We are completely clueless when it comes to the field and we really need as much help as we can get. What we really want to know the most is what video editing software we should get, along with a few basic pointers and I feel as if we should be on our way to sharing our ideas with the world. We've been discussing getting some of our stuff out on the web for a pretty long time now but this one detail is killing our dream. Much thanks and appreciation to you if you can help. Also we are huge fans, thought I should throw that out.

So I'm not Rhett or Link and I don't make videos, but I feel like any program for editing would do. A lot of people (like Jenna Marbles) just use iMovie. Others use FinalCut Pro/Studio or Adobe Premiere and there's lots of tutorials on YouTube. This video is for editing vlogs mainly and it's an hour long, but I think it's really educational (also it's Hank Green!):

Best wishes!

Thank you Oodles for the help!

hi, justin.

i have a PC and i only use the program it came with, which is windows movie maker. i know that it is not by any means advanced software, but it is very easy to use! if you have a PC, check for this program on your computer!

I have also been making videos for a while now, most of which i dont post on this internet...though some i do. if you want to see what i did most recently using WMM, see my most recent sketch i did with my friend @ this link: http://ning.it/OhQWE1

you can do the basics of cutting, splicing, adding effects, and music with WMM (if you have a PC) and it is also free (if you have a PC).

WMM is really nice! I have the latest Windows though (I think 7? idk) and it came with something else. Windows Live or something that's not as good as WMM. There's also some okay, basic freeware out there to download for editing.

Hmmm, good question! Well, I agree with Rachel and Lysh Fish. Now of course you can use something like Lysh Fish suggested, but it may number well into the hundreds, which may be more than you want to spend. I would suggest using as a cheaper alternative Studio HD ultimate pinnacle or Roxio creator 2012 pro. But for now, just use whatever your computer came with: Imovie for mac and windows movie maker for PC's.

Hope that helps...

If you don't know how to operate your editing software, just look for tutorials on the great YouTube!

:D Good Luck, and make sure to post your YouTube channel on my page, so I can subscribe. :)

I use iMovie to edit the videos on my channel, becaus I feel as though it is easiest (not to mention cheapest) I still SUCK at editing, but don't make it any more difficult than it already is. I suggest not doing many cut-aways. I usually only edit if I need an into/outro, VoiceOver, picture inserted, or if I'm playing multiple characters (which I strongly suggest)
Good luck in your YouTube career!

Honestly, the best way to do it is just to decide something you want to do and mess around until you get it. Sure, look at some YouTube tutorials along the way for more knowledge-based things, and search forums when you're encountering problems. But in my experience, it's best just to learn how to edit your videos by editing your videos, not by "learning" and then editing after.

That's just how I've done it. Not that I'm a professional by any means. But that's my advice.

Justin that is what Jason does for Rhett and Link. Rhett and Link film it and tell Jason what they want done and he edits it. I think you could get a free intern online and they will work for collage credit. I'm not sure how that works and if you are eligible to hire one but if you don't know how to edit and don't have time to learn or don't want to learn you could try to hire someone to do it or find a friend to do it for free.

if you really want to put a lot into this, spend money on a program, but if it's just a hobby, work with what you have.
