He sat there, in the cold city's night, his bare palms were clammy and his breathe a mist in the night's chill air. I need to know if I can do it. I have to do this. The teenage boy, roughly eighteen, just kept rubbing his fingers against his palms, waiting for something, anything for him to bolt at. Something fell. As quick as lightning the boy jolted and held his hands out, palm toward the sound. Flames from his hands engulfed the fallen box. His eyes were wide as the orange light from the fire filled him. I can control it...
Thanis grasped onto the pole at the top of the Empire State building; watching down through white glowing eyes behind the black veil that cloaked his face. The white orbs in his head narrowed as smoke rose from a building three miles west. Releasing the pole, Thanis free fell downwards, his black, lightweight armor reflecting off the windows.
When will these pathetic technical fools realize that nothing goes unnoticed by me. He thought to himself as his cape transformed into a large set of black wings. He arrived at the burning building and hovered for a moment before spying some fleeing the scene, he looked to nineteen or twenty years old. Thanis grinned before soaring towards the suspect, sending him into the ground with both his feet.
He heard something else; he took a step back. That didn't stop his hard thump to the ground as someone landed before him. The teenager scrambled to stand up, then backed up as far as he could until his hoodie hit the wall. He kept his voice from quivering, but not his knees.
"What do you want?" He managed keeping his palms at the ready.
Thanis narrowed his eyes and the wings dropped back into his cape.
"I want criminal scum like you locked away." He said as he stepped back into a sparring stance. Then, without any warning, jumped forward and sent a kick towards the boy's skull.
With out thinking, he raised his hands in a fraction of a second and released radiating flames that seemed to swallow the supernatural-being's leg as he ducked under it. He then smirked and turned to the figure. The boy flashed a deck of cards before the figure's eyes, then burned all except one. The boy snapped his fingers and disappeared, leaving only the Ace of Diamonds.
Cocking his head to the left, Thanis stared at the boy. His cape draped over his shoulders and seemed to swallow his body into nothing. "You aren't the only one with an ace up their sleeve." He said, sliding his back his left foot. He then stuck his hand into his cape, where it was swallowed into a void. Thanis then pulled out a bo staff. "Do not make this harder, boy!"
Arriving, he brushed off his hoodie. Soot covered him. As he strode through the dark passage, his gate confident, he peeled the hoodie from his back and shook out his hair. The lighting was dim and the air harsh to breathe. Coming upon a wall, he tapped it twice at the base, once in the middle then slid his finger exactly 5.7 centimeters. The wall opened reveling his safe house.A girl, about his age, with platinum blonde hair and red tips came running towards him worried.
"Are you insane?! Do you know who that was? He could wipe you out by blinking!"
"Woooah, wooooah now, Diamond." I said putting a hand on her shoulder and walking her toward the couch. "He didn't wipe me out, I stumbled and we're the best of the unknown thugs there is!" Diamond rolled her eyes at him as he picked more soot off his jeans. "Hey, can you make the trip back less dirty? Those systems you have me sucked through are disgusting!"
Diamond looked up at him and sighed. "I'll try, Ace, just promise me you won't go messing around with that guy again! We're all each other have. Don't go getting killed."
Diamond and Ace exchanged glances.
She commented, "I don't remember you..."
Ace separated the new guy from Diamond. "How did you find us and what do you want?"
Growling in frustration, Thanis' eyes changed from white to green as he stared at the magic residue that was left from the boy leaving.
"Should be easy to track, he hasn't started covering his trail yet." He said out loud, and started to chant incoherently when a police man turned around the corner and spotted him. The officer instantly pulled out his Glock Nineteen Eleven and aimed it at Thanis' head.
"Dispatch, I've spotted the masked man, we are behind the Batts Drugs building, please send back up and a SWAT team." He said into his radio with a wavering voice.
"This is not a wise course of action, Officer." Thanis said, his eyes narrowing as they changed color to red. He put the bo staff back in his cape and slowly started walking towards the policeman.
"Stay back! I will shoot you!" The man said, sweat beating down his face.
"No, you won't." Thanis said as he put his snapped his fingers. The gun turned into a raven and flew off. A pillar of mist rose and surrounded Thanis, who was gone when the smoke cleared.
"I said what the hell do you want!" Reiterated Ace clearly and louder than before.
He kept distance between Diamond and the kid who just magically appeared. Diamond became impatient. She tapped Ace's shoulder. He sent a firebolt directly at the boy. Just as the flames licked the boys shirt, Diamond teleported him back to the ally from which Ace had just come. A few seconds after she retraced how the boy had found them and quickly cleared all trace of them being found.
"So, what now?" Ace asked.
Diamond shrugged, "I don't know..."
When Delia watched the panel close behind the boy, she had to fight the urge to run in after him, to infiltrate the defenses.
When she heard voices behind the wall, the voice of a girl, she had to close her white eyes behind her red veil and take a hot, humid breath.
She couldn’t reveal herself yet. The whole mission would be compromised. They chose her for the job specifically because she wasn’t impulsive; gave her the red armor, cape, and veil because they knew she could maintain peace within herself. She swore an oath, to gather intelligence, information, but never interfere.
But would they ever get an opportunity like this again? Even if the ones in black arrived, was there any guarantee they could manage to enter? Couldn’t she do some good?
She walked away from behind the ancient, decrepit construction materials where she was kneeling and approached the wall. She could see it even in the darkness, the hair-thin lining of the panel that would let her in.
Delia traced her dark hand against the cool brick wall, and had to fight every ounce of curiosity within her to walk right in and make herself known. Instead, she drew her hand back and walked away, into the unforgiving night air to wait for any other sign of activity. Always wait.
That was her job after all.
