Well let's see...This is how I got into manga...
When I was in the fourth grade, we had a book fair at our school. Someone in my class bought a Shonen Jump, and I thought it was cool, so I went to the book fair, and bought it with what little money I had. I read it cover to cover a thousand times, even though I didn't really get any of the plotlines, because they were all in the middle of a story arc. Eventually, I subscribed to Shonen Jump and got them in the mail every month. After at least a year, I think, there was a preview for the first Bleach in it, and when it came out, I decided to get that as my first actual single manga. And now I have a collection of probably...at least over 200, I'd say. x]
I can't remember how exactly I got into watching anime...
I've been watching DBZ for as long as I can remember, and Pokemon even before that.
I would come home every day from school and watch Yu Yu Hakusho after sitting through Gundam SD. xD
Also I would stay up late most nights to watch Inu-Yasha for a while....and one time I stayed up until 4am to watch Case Closed. xD
The funny thing for me was that I didn't know I was watching anime when I first started watching it. I was in third or fourth grade when I was watching Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network's Toonami. I started watching other stuff they had on like Gundam Wing. During this phase I worshiped DBZ and I read the magazines about it. Slowly I was picking up more shows, like Yu Yu Hakusho and Outlaw Star. This is also when Toonami was moved to night times and eventually only to Friday or Saturday nights. As I kept reading DBZ magazines I started learning about anime and started branching out more. Admittedly I stay up too late, too often, to watch anime on Adult Swim and online.
Shonen Jump was also a big deal for me. At one point I had a subscription for a year or two. I loved it and I was learning lots about manga. Inevitably in high school I started buying mangas. I don't have the impressive collection that Lauren has, but I have a decent amount. Many of my mangas are from older series so I often have a hard time locating the whole thing. In addition to Shonen Jump I have a collection of Newtype USA magazines. This was a great source for imformation and reviews on anime/manga, as well as on the industry and Japanese culture. Sadly Newtype was discontinued, but Otaku USA emerged, utilizing a similar layout and style to Newtype.
O.O I wish I could get myself more interested in manga. But, after a while, I find that I get bored with the reading when I would much rather have the actual characters in the anime do all the thinking for me. The only manga I read/have read on a regualr basis is Naruto, and Heart no Kuni no Alice. I also read the manga for Elfen Lied while I watched the series so I could compare the differences. I too was watching anime without knowing exactly what it was. I watched a lot of Pokemon and Naruto, and Avatar the Last Airbender, even though that's not really an aime. Shortly after I became pretty much addicted to those shows, I met a guy, who is now one of my best friends, and he informed me of what anime was. For about a year I refused to watch any kind of "real" anime and I insisted that anime in general was stupid. Then I watched Vampire Knight and Death Note. Although I didn't want to admit my friend was right, I knew that from that point on I was going to be addicted to all things anime!
Yes, anime strikes again! It is amazing how a few good ones will clench your fate into fandom.
I got into anime, when I was in the 8th grade or so. My sis, had a boyfriend, that I got to know, and were friends now. So that guy, just asked my if I liked anime, I didn't knew if I liked it, couse the only anime I saw was DBZ. So after explaining the situation to him, he opened the flood gates of anime, and since then, I'm loving it! XD
I love seeing the love for anime passed on to friends!

I'm new to anime, it was just last year, all my friends were into anime, and i wanted to see what it was all about so i saw the first episode of bleach and right away loved it... a few months after trying to catch up with bleach, i asked a very good friend of mine what other anime i should watch, and right away he said death note...at first it was ok, until i say episode 3, thats when i loved anime...(and i hate light yagami for 'sigh' killing 'sigh' him) right away the battle of monolauges between kira and L sparked my love for anime. not long ago i finished watching code geass R2, and that so far had been my most favorite anime, but now that im watching Beck Mongolian Chop Squad, i think i might change my mind, Beck is so real! Manga at first caught my attention but i had no way of reading it, so ive never read a desent manga before :(
Well I read alot more Manga than anime. It all started with Pokemon, then to Sailor moon and finally it rested on inuyasha, when I was 8. Soon after that my anime access was widened by YTV's Bionix. This allowed me to fall in love with anime like Gundam Seed, Case Closed, .Hack//sign and various others. Then there was...Naruto. This was before it got sickeningly popular. I was really into it till one day I realized..."dude..this is illogical."

For along time after that I used the computer all the time, so I started reading manga and watching Anime/Japanese Horror films. And the rest is history~
My sister handed me Death Note 2 one day and I got hooked... I read all of the Death Note books and then a few Chibi Vampire. Now I love furuba!
Naruto=illogical. Too funny Mack. I haven't had the will power to start it and then make the commitment to keep up with it.

Beck is one I have been meaning to read for a long time. I think I shall have to do that soon, after the praise it just received from Marcos.

It is funny, but now that I think about it, before I even got to watching DBZ or Gundam, I was watching things like Speed Racer or Sonic the Hedgehog, and didn't even realize where it came from. Even in fourth grade, one of my friends was a Sailor Moon fan, but I never got into it.
well.... i got bored of american cartoons, did some internet searching, then wham! i was in anime land ^_^
Beck is actually one of the greatest anime/mangas, I've ever had the pleasure of watching/reading. I really recommend it.
