Flight of the Conchords Comparison

In the past week I've heard this comparison several times, so I wanted to know are you often compared to Flight of the Conchords?

I've seen both seasons of their show and I've seen them live three times, so I'm very familiar with them and I do understand why you'd be compared to them. The other day a picture of you both was on my screen and my mom even thought that Link was Jemaine Clement.

I also want to know if you're influenced by them at all, and if you're not do you have any influences?

we take it as a compliment to be compared to them, since they're so talented and successful.
two guys, musical, quirky...and the black glasses and hair.

and musically,we are both influenced by 70's soul (their recent cd was an homage to a Seals and Crofts album cover)

honestly, it's a little frustrating to be compared to them so much. when writing songs now, we actually try to make sure we're not walking directly in to a comparison. i wouldn't elect to add that parameter to the songwriting process. but it's nothing to complain about.

what do you think of all this?

It's good that you take it as a compliment, but I do understand the frustration, because you guys are very different (in a good way).
I have no doubt that you'll continue to be fresh and original. :)

Personally, I have defended R&L many times on YouTube when vitriolic people show up and summarily dismiss Rhett and Link as some cheap F0TC knock off.

I will admit it ticks me off. It's not that R&L get compared to FoTC but rather that R&L are always positioned as some sort of copy cat team. We all know this is complete garbage. Throw in the Fact that R&L are BETTER than FoTC and the anti-R&L YouTube posts anger me even more.

Naturally, as I was fighting the good fight for R&L, no Mythical Beasts came along to my aid.... That's a disappointment.

I can't say that it's necessarily a bad thing for them to get compared to FotC. People saying they copied FotC is the bad thing.
I love both of them, so I do understand the comparison, but it's really nothing for me to get angry about. I mean, I guess it can get a little annoying, knowing a lot about both of them and knowing how much of a difference there is.

I'm pretty sure that many of the people that throw that discussion around barely know a thing about Rhett and Link, they just base that opinion on one particular video or their appearance.

I'm going to ask this, you like Flight of the Conchords, correct? I just guessed because your mythical beast it EagleShark, and Jemaine from FotC was in a movie called Eagle vs. Shark.

Actually EagleShark is just a coincidence. I always liked eagles and I appreciate the speed, ferociousness and coolness of sharks. I wanted something that flies and also goes in the water.

I had no idea that Jermaine Clement was in anything called Eagle vs. Shark and to be honest, I don't have the curiosity to find out about it either (purely from all the crap FoTC fans on YouTube throw at R&L). I'll take a pass on that one.

I am a fan of both to tell you the truth, but there are some differences that should be noted.
-R&L keep it clean, FotC's music is not.

Haha yes, very true. Rhett and Link keep their stuff very kid friendly. Flight of the Conchords don't really do that.

i can see where that would be annoying. i thought of this comparison at first but then i thought, "they are usually exponentially more kid friendly" and also, "they are exponentially more attractive" hahaha but i think that, as a musician, being compared to other groups has the plus of a compliment(usually) but also gets annoying as part of musicianship is developing your own style and becoming recognizable. i thought you guys deserved a lot of credit when it comes to breaking free from the comparison zone.

Rhett & Link - When you hear the comparison just say, "But the Flight of the Concords have only been performing since 1998, we've been performing since the first day of first grade in 1989!"
