Florida: The Sunshine State

I live in Florida now, but I'm born and raised in New York. I find there's lots to talk about with this place. Are you a native Floridian or a "transplant?" Prefer North, Central or South? Like the Ocean or the Gulf? Ever had boiled peanuts? What is the deal with those? And, most importantly, "Is Florida a Southern State?"

Forgive me Zack. When I wrote that Florida was not a southern state, that was before I experienced southern hospitality and culture in Tallahassee. It was refreshing ... like going home. So now I am in a dilemma. While I still hold that it is not a southern state, there is definitely southern in this state.

I am born and raised in Tampa, FL. I have pretty much lived here my whole life except for 2 years when I was in the Army and was in AZ. In my 29 years a lot has changed in Tampa! So many people from other states that don't know how to drive come down here. Tampa has really blown up in population and although I am not fond of how Tampa has turn out I still love it here.

I love boiled peanuts my mom used to buy them for me when we would go to the flea markets and I would follow behind her while trying to eat them! They kept me busy and kept me from asking my mom to buy me something! Cajun boiled peanuts are the best. My boyfriend is from NY and he never had boiled peanuts until he met me and he likes them just as much as I do!

We are not a southern state but there are a lot of country people north of Tampa & Orlando. We are our own mix since so many people come from up north!

One thing I will say that I can NOT stand is when people come down here from other states and complain about Florida. Especially those who complain about the system! We don't want people living off the system and FL was a retirement state not a welfare state! So if you complain then go back to the state you came from or pick another because if your state was so good then why did you leave?

Enjoy the sun, the beaches and the many other fun things FL has to offer!

From Miami, Born and Raised in South Florida. even have a place down in Marathon in the Keys. I have never boiled peanuts. Florida is a southern state, but not the typical southern u see in the movies.

I'm native, but my roots are in Canada. Florida is partially a Southern state, from Central Florida upward.

i strongly dislike boiled peanuts (picky eater. meh.)

and yes. florida IS a southern state

Sunny South West Florida is my home! I am a transplant from New Jersey (pause for Jersey Jokes). Florida is southern in geography but not in personality! Boiled Peanuts? UGH!!! who would try them? I have lived in Central Florida and North Florida for college and love them too-but it is nice to drive 10 minutes to the Gulf and watch the beautiful sunsets!

(BTW, no I do not have a Jersey accent-I am from south NJ)

I'm from Florida too! I very much disagree that florida is not a southen state. I think culturally it mostly isn't but northwest florida most definitely is very southern.
