Home of Rhett & Link fans - the Mythical Beasts!

Well, I've never done a blog before, so I'll probably just do this wrong, but I think (correct me if this is wrong) that I can rant and talk about what's annoying at this present time.

And to be quite honest, what annoys me the most right now is 21st century minimalist composers, and more just the music itself. To begin with, it's not music, it's just noise. All care for harmony and a melody that was bearable to listen to have been forgotten.

Secondly, it really annoys me that they composers have the cheek to say that their "compositions" are intellectual. I'm sorry, since when was music eever about being brainy? As far a music every was, it was something that could be shared with the people, that would stir emotions, and would leave you with a melody floating through your head for the next few weeks, or months if written well enough. But no, these buffoons just come along, making experienced, proffesional musicians make horrific sounds out of instruments that were made for better things.

And unfortuanately, I have been roped into playing in such a piece next week (Wednesday 10th November to be precise) at the Royal Albert Hall in London. We've had three rehearsal for it, and all I can say is that it sounds like a eagle being strangled crossed with a drowning rat. It's is not remotely pleasant to play, and there are four movements in all, spanning 12 minutes in total. 12 minutes of torture, no just for a small orchestra, not even a big orchestra. No, it's a huge ensemble including a huge string section, 120 brass players, 80 woodwind player, 4 timpanists, and a massed choir full of 800 kids from around my local county. Nobody likes it apart from the stupid idiot who wrote it in the first place, and quite how he finds it so pleasing to listen to is beyond me. I just want to take the score and ram it where the sun really doesn't shine.

Anyway, end of my first blog rant,

Until next time all,

Gareth
