 Prologue

Ed Nelson was a 17 year old high-schooler from a town named Inuktitut Heaven knows where in Alaska. He drove his large junky ford 4x4 down a snowy road to the Inuktitut high school science high school center dead center in the middle of the city. He looked out his side window. Strange clouds hung over, looking ominous. He turned into the small parking lot of the brick building. As he pulled up, his science teacher came and looked through the window. Ed tried to open the door, but it was stuck. He pulled harder. It finally swung open.

"You’re late again" his science teacher shook his head.

"I know, I know" Edward Jumped out and slammed the door in urgency.

"This is the third time this week, Ed. It’s time to step up your game! I want to see your truck in my parking lot on time from now on."

"Look, I'm sorry, alright! The roads are covered in ice 6 inches thick!"

The science teacher looked at the clunky old truck.

"Well get new chains or something. Your parents wouldn't have liked you being late."

Ed paused. His parents died when he was 12. His dad was a policeman who got shot trying to corner a murderer. His mom died in a car crash a month after. Inuktitut (which meant “home” in Eskimo) was a fairly large city and it required a car to get around. But it was no New York City. It was more or less in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a “mountain bowl” in the northwestern part of the 49th state. Ed walked into the small one room building with a large 'Inuktitut high school: science labs' on one wall. Just above that was an igloo. Ed opened up and old, battered up Apple Power Book g4 his dad had given him for his science. His dad wanted him to take a science class for a reason, but never got to tell Ed the reason. He didn't know if Ed would get excited or confused, so he was going to save until he was older and knew more. But when he died, the project was put under wraps and forgotten. No one knew where it was. Most people say it was stolen. But others say it’s still at the Juneau base down south, waiting for a young and talented mind to find it and finish what might be one of the most significant military projects since the b2 bomber!

What Ed didn't know is that he has going have more to do with it than he ever thought. And things were about change for good.

Over the years he had an interest in mountain predators. Mountain lions, hawks, so on and so forth, but the one he was most interested in is wolves. And he had all right to! Arctic wolves are vicious pack predators that work hard to survive the cold Alaskan weather. Using almost military-like tactics, they can bring down mountain deer easily. The military and police used dogs to do everything from sniffing out drugs to taking down enemies and guarding valuable items and major jails full of robbers and murderers. They can fit into places that we couldn’t. They are some of the police and military most valuable members, no doubt. And it would be impossible to replace them.

"Alright, where were we" the teacher wrote 'blizzards and other winter storms' up on an old chalk board that looked as though it had never been cleaned.

"Alright, would anyone like to tell me how a large storm is made?" he pointed towards Ed. Ed put his face in his palms.

"Of course" he mumbled "Of course" he stood up. This was his last year in school, and he wasn’t doing well.

Ed walked in the door of his small one story house, threw his laptop on the table, and jumped on the couch. He had lived in the small house for only 2 years, and there were various posters on the wall. Thing like star wars and lord of the rings. He was about to turn on the television when a loud clap of thunder made his house shake and the lights flicker. This made him grasp the couch arm. He almost thought a truck had crashed right outside the house.  He looked outside. Dark clouds rolled in the sky. He picked up his phone to call his science teacher to see if he knew what this storm was, still looking at the clouds. Wind blew hard and storm sirens started to ring across the town. He jumped when he saw a large flash of lightning hit a radio tower close to his house and a loud clap of lightning smashed the windows of his house. The jolt made him drop his phone before he ran outside to his truck. Traffic jammed up the main road. He swung the door of his truck open and slid into the driver seat. He frantically searched for the keys. They fell out if the sun visor and he jammed them into the ignition. The trucks engine turned over but wouldn't start. He turned the key again. Wind pushed against the truck, making it slide on his icy driveway. "Come on, start!"

He turned it again. Nothing. The truck putted.

“Why won’t you start!” he kicked his dashboard, almost as though that would make the car start.

He looked outside. It started to rain. He heard the drops on the windshield and thunder rolled across the sky. When the truck finally started, he tried to pull into the traffic. But before he made it out of his driveway, a deafening boom and an explosion made his ears pop. He felt a hard pain in his chest. The explosion flung him and chunks of the truck in all directions. He hoped the pain wasn't what he thought it was. Thunder rolled. His steady breathing sucked in the evaporated rain, causing a burning feeling in his lungs. In a minute he was unconscious.
