Something great has happened this semester, my classes really have me thinking about my place in society. It really is an interesting thing to meditate on. I guess between having Mexican-American Culture, Music and the cultural wars (Heavy Metal), and World history (where we have been asked what is culture), it is somewhat inevitable that I would start contemplating this. Based on the way my Mexican-American professor teaches the topic, the empty space above the hyphen is where you pick and choose and create your own space. This is applicable to any ethnic group and the way I see it, this concept is also applicable to subcultures. I play with that empty place a lot even though I don't do it consciously most of the time. Who I am in different situations changes due to what I see as fit or more beneficial and I see that this negotiation will only increase as I get older. I don't know if by the end of the semester I will be able to say an actual place where I fit, but I will see my world differently. I will also see everyone else's space in a new light. So who do you think you are? Maybe you play with your identity to fare better in different situations. Since we are only a few weeks into the semester, I will probably revisit this topic often and elaborate my thoughts on it.
