I learned making puppets as a teen.  Now I'm in my 40's, so I've had a chance to improve my skills.  The best way to learn how to build is to buy a puppet pattern from www.projectpuppet.com.  I charge about $500-$700 to make custom puppets, so building your own is your best option if you want to try it out.  The pattern I made the Rhett and Link puppets from is not available commercially.  The Pinhead pattern from Project Puppet is my favorite beginner's pattern that can make a roughly human shaped head.  Is it very doable for someone who has strong crafting skills and is comfortable sewing.
