Home of Rhett & Link fans - the Mythical Beasts!
Several months ago, the weird website I made got featured on GMM. I just visited the Kommunity for the first time in about a year, so I thought I'd write a post talking about how I came up with the idea.
I was on a road trip across the country at the time (I was really bored!), and I thought I'd make a weird I could sent over to Rhett and Link.
One of the most weirdest/interesting websites I've ever seen is Pointer Pointer; you move your cursor around the page, and an image of somebody pointing to your cursor appears. It's cool because it's weird and interactive.
The first thing I did was rotoscope, or remove, Link's face out of the footage from the Nerd Vs. Geek rap battle in Adobe After Effects.
This was harder than you might think, because it's really difficult to make hair look normal when you crop it out.
After that, I made 9 different images of Link looking in different directions, and then added reflections to the eyes and the glasses.
(It sounds easy here, but trust me, it wasn't! In addition to actually working on it, the computer I was using over heated and would just shut down after a few minutes of work.)
Next, I used some JavaScript to change the image depending on where your cursor is located.
A few weeks passed, and then something weird happened...
A few seconds later, I got a message saying that my website had been chosen, and that my t-shirt was on the way.
Just got my epic t-shirt! The #mythicalbeast and @squarespace icons on the back are really cool. @rhettandlink pic.twitter.com/S1eW58dkn7
