<WARNING!>

This post may cause major OCD attacks in the people who can't stand an unsolved Rubik's Cube because I am in fact showing how to create an unsolved Cube on PURPOSE!

Those who suffer from OCD or OCPD are not recommended to read this post or follow along with this tutorial!

</WARNING!>

Some words in advance:

In this tutorial I will try my best to explain to you how to create a Rubik's Cube that looks like it is solved from three sides and show off a single unsolved brick on a fourth side. The other two sides are not supposed to be seen because they would spoil the illusion and are also not seen in the "My OCD" musicvideo which I try to replicate here.

So here we go!

This is what you will need:

- a solved Rubik's Cube

- some patience

- a working brain

Before we can get started I need to make sure you understand how a Rubik's Cube works. If you already know how they work you can go ahead and skip to the next line like this one

So the first thing you have to do to understand the cube is tearing it apart.

DON'T DO THIS WITH YOURS! At first it won't be so easy if you have an original Rubik's Cube and putting it back together isn't that easy as well.

I did this for educational purposes only.

Sorry if the picture is a bit blurry but you can see that on the inside of the cube is a fixed cross which can not be alternated.

That means on an original Rubik's Cube:

- White on the opposite of Yellow

- Red is opposite of Orange

- Green is opposite of Blue

AND most importantly the piece on the middle of a side of the cube defines the color of the side!

So that means if you would solve a cube

from scratch this side is going to be the white side (for example) even if there are no other white pieces on that side yet.

Now that we know the insides of a cube you need to learn how to turn the cube to get the result we want.

But how am I supposed to tell you how to turn the cube the right way?

Well, that's fairly easy:

The side facing to you is the frontside indicated with an F in the picture.
If I say F (short for Front) you have to turn the front layer clockwise by 90°.

Same goes for the other (Left, Right, Upper, Down & Back) sides.

Another thing you will need is the Middle layer. The middle layer is normally not necessary but since the second move we will need later is quite an advanced one... this is required...

Just another picture to clarify how you have to turn the cube...

Forget about E and S... You'll propably never need those...

While the letter indicates that you have to turn the layer clockwise

F = turn front 90° clockwise

there are also ways to indicate that you have to turn the layer counterclockwise so you don't have to turn it clockwise three times (270°).

So if I want you to turn a layer counterclockwise I indicate that with a small "i" or with this → '

So    Fi    or   F'    = turn front layer 90° counterclockwise.

In my case we're going to use F', L', R', etc. because I'm more used to this notation.

A 2 after a letter means that you have to turn that  layer by 180° the direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) doesn't matter here because you will end up on the same spot.

    R2    = turn right layer by 180°

    L2     = turn left layer by 180°

Now that we all know the notation of the cube we can ho on to the interesting part. This is how the cube will look like in the end:

I only had one originial Rubik's Cube at hand so had to use my others, too...

Sorry for the inconvenience... anyways the small cube shows the red blue and yellow sides, the cube on the left  shows the single unsolved peice on the orange side and the other two cubes show the orange and white sides the middle one with the blue side (on that cube it's a dark purple but on a ariginal Cube it shoulb be blue) on top and the right cube shows the green side in top which is normally on the bottom.

Here you can also see why the white and green sides are not supposed to be shown off: there is another white/green colored piece which is orientated wrong.

I am going to use the cube on the left, which is an original Rubik's Cube and the cube on the right which has the same color pattern but no black borders.

Now if you hold the blue side towards you with the white side facing up and apply this step (remember this as step 1!):

R'  U  R'  U'  R'  U'  R'  U  R  U  R2

You should get this

It's important that the white, blue and yellow sides are still SOLVED!

So... it's been a day since I wrote step 1 and I decided to include a video for both steps for more visual support...

Well, the embedding doesn't seem to work somehow... anyways here  is the video for step 1:

 http://youtu.be/bwwFfrXSCL0

The best thing to do would be following along with the video...

Now, step 2 is as I mentioned before a rather advanced step but here we go...

Hold the cube with the orange side facing towards you with the white side STILL pointing up and do the following:

R  U  R'  U'  M'  U  R'  U'  L'

And also there is a video for step 2: http://youtu.be/AGp1luz1dE4

Sooo it's been a couple of days... I had to give the original Rubik's Cube back to it's owner because she moved... and I have a new keyboard... but whatever...

As you can see in the video the cube is now in the desired state where three sides are solved... at least it should be...

so... here is the whole thing again:

http://youtu.be/IUfL9BYBqQY

If you didn't get this result... well... it's a lot harder to solve that cube again but maybe contact me... I may be able to help you...

Now that I think about that... I hope I don't have to post a second tutorial on how to solve the whole thing...

Anyways... if you came to the point and get the cube in the desired state but want to revert iw back to solved... well there is a easy way to do that!

Just repeat step 2 twice with orange side facing towards you and the white side facing up then do step 1 twice with blue side facing towards you and white side facing up and then you should be back to a completely solved cube!

If you followed this tutorial please let me know if you succeeded and leave some feedback!

I know it was a lot and it's propably hard to follow but anyways...
Hope you liked it!
