The compound, as we called it, was once a place where a great mind did its thinking. The mind I speak of belonged to General Lew Wallace and his study along with the large fence that surrounds it has saved many lives in the past few years. It all started several years ago when a strange virus started infecting people around the world. Most people that contracted the virus died within days but the most resilient of the infected weren’t killed but were instead transformed into vile creatures that feast on the flesh of others. Some people however were, in a way, immune to this virus and when it attacked their bodies they only got stronger. It was this strength that would soon become key to the survival of the human race.
I woke up with the warm air hitting my face and the soft glow of the light in the corner coming slowly into focus as my eyes opened. But it was in this moment I knew that something was wrong, it was a quiet and serene moment with only the low hum of the heater puncturing the silence. Something deep in my soul told me at that moment that the world as I had known it was now forever changed. I rose slowly from my bed and cautiously went to look out my front window, what I saw was astonishing. Instead of the typically dead look of my neighborhood there were people, or more appropriately “things”, everywhere. Several of these walking corpses seemed to have caught someone who had recently been alive and with what seemed like inhuman strength were ripping out its intestines and devouring them hungrily. I immediately backed away from the window and made sure the door was locked before retreating to my bedroom to clear my head.
I checked the TV hoping for someone to inform me that this was all going to blow over and that the world could recover from it, no such reassurance was given. All I saw on TV was pandemonium and violence, rabid people attacking and eating those who weren’t. I decided that this was what life was going to be like from now on and resolved myself to deal with it. So I started to plan how to stay alive in this new world I had been suddenly thrust into. I had decided that my best chance of survival lay in finding a place nearby that I could reinforce if needed and hole up in. One place came to mind immediately, The Lew Wallace Study, I knew that no other place around provided the protection that it did. It consisted of two buildings and a large park like area surrounded by a large brick wall with only two entrances, one was a large enough for a car to drive through and could be closed with a large metal gate the other was only big enough for one person to fit through and could also be closed with a gate. The Study was also fitted with a water purification system that collected and purified rain water, this was important because soon water may be hard to find.
I gathered the most important of my things; clothes, a coat,
