I have been on the internet this morning watching some videos about a painter from Australia who is only 4 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI4WPuudERo
I am intrigued by this as an artist. She certainly is genetically wired for artistic inclination seeing that both her parents are artists. The question is, is she a "bonafied Abstract Expressionist painter"? At first, I figured the gallery in New York was displaying her work because of the novelty of a four year old being a painter. However, upon reading an interview with the gallery owner, she was first drawn to the paintings and only after getting in touch with the artist, did she discover that the paintings were done by a child.
Watch the video and you be the judge.
As an artist, I wonder if the fact that she has no preconceived ideas about art is why she is so spontaneous. She has not been taught or told what makes good or bad art. She has simply been allowed to do her own thing and create. I on the other hand, I have been trained and taught composition and color theory and about what society thinks or finds acceptable as art. Also, she is allowed complete freedom to be messy, crawl all over the canvas and just be.
Anyway, I am still ruminating on this whole thing. If you are interested, a documentary was made about this subject and a film is out called "My kid could paint that!" Which I seriously doubt but you can be the judge.
have a great day!
