I use JASC Animation Shop 3 to do graphic animations, like custom smilies and stuff like that. But, since I'm just now starting to vlog and am trying to get a little more ambitious about video editing, I wonder if there's any software that's good for this? Anyone?

I use Windows Movie Maker...I actually like it a lot, it's really easy to use.
I have no idea, but if you do ever find a program please tell me! I only have Windows Movie Maker, it's a great program but it doesn't have too many features.
Depending on what you want to do, you might be able to get away with Windows Movie Maker. It's pretty solid for basic editing.

A few months ago I started shopping around for something else to support multi-track editing, and ultimately decided on Magix Movie Edit Pro. I went with it mainly because I could use a Best Buy gift card to buy it, but I have been pretty happy with it so far. Very straight forward and user friendly.

There are lots of options out there and most offer a 30-day trial so you can play around with it before making up your mind; you might want to refer to this link for a starting point: http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

I'm still figuring stuff out, but here are some of the videos I've made with Magix Movie Edit Pro....

Okay, I tried to use it to edit together a couple of takes for my Monday vlog update. I'm not thrilled with the transitions you'll see, but it's my first try and I probably don't know how to do what I wanted to do yet. I'll monkey around with it some more. Ben, I'd seen 2 of those videos before...I'm guessing I can't do much of that with Windows Movie Maker.

I know it's probably not a popular thing to say in here, but I just found out today that I'm gonna have some unexpected funds and I'm seriously considering getting a Mac. Can't hurt to have options!
The Multitrack stuff you can't do with WMM, but for something as simple as adding in a music soundtrack, yes. I'm with Anna, for basic editing, you can't go wrong with WMM. What sorts of things are you trying to do?

Well, right now, it's just as simple as wanting to edit together several takes of a single talking head video like Monday's update. You'll see the transitions aren't great, but I couldn't find where I could hard splice in a frame by frame format like I can in Animation Shop. Still, I was in a hurry to get the thing ready...and I am the biggest n00b in video land! But, with this crowd, I'm going to have little choice but to get some skilz in a hurry!
i was just testing out wmm cause my friend wanted a tech guy for his vids, and you can add a soundtrack by importing mp3 tracks.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro and occasionally Adobe After Effects. I bought the master collection of Adobe for about $500, which is a massive discount. Gotta love being a student :P
