Michigan: America's high-five!
Hello from the mitten state! We've got lakes; five of them and they're all great. Despite our state economy taking a nose-dive in recent years, Michigan still has a lot to offer. There's breathtaking scenery to the north, and some awesome little "big" cities in the south-east. (I'm sure the west side of the state does too, but I don't live there, so I'm biased.)
Our governor is trying to resurrect this fair state by luring in the movie industry...it's kinda cool; DeNiro was filming something around Ypsi in the past couple of months, and Drew Barrymore shot a movie in Saline last year. (maybe the year before that, time has been flying.) 'Tis kinda a big deal for our humble state, hence the shameless name-dropping.
If you ever come to Michigan, you must head to the top of the mitten, go across the bridge, and find the Mystery Spot. It's worth the drive, I promise. (don't be surprised if someone calls you a fudgie while you're up there...it's the northerners' nickname for tourists.)

I have tons of family in Michigan... after all my great-grandparents (and beyond) immigrated, Michigan is where they went to! My dad's family is in Howell and my mom's family is in Swartz Creek. My mom's parents own a cottage up in Oscoda (definitely fun to say!!), and I have spent many a summers up there. Most of my family members are U of M fans (Go BLUE!!!!), though we have one who is a Michigan State supporter... we kind of shun her. :) I just worked with Dr. Rardin from U of M at a conducting masterclass... wouldn't mind going there for a doctorate. I used to go to camp (Brook Cherith) just outside of Grand Rapids. And my immediate family always used to walk the Bridge (Mackinac, that is!!) over Labor Day. I may not live in the state, but... it is kind of home to me, too... I live in IN to the south... hello, neighbor!!
I definitely agree that Michigan is one of the most beautiful states!!! I've been to the Tulip Festival in Holland, and the northern part of the state is definitely breathtaking... Charlevoix is definitely a must-see town!!! -

Hey neighbor Teresa!
My old roommate's family has a cabin up in Oscoda too...we've had plenty of good times up there, making our own fun! I'm ashamed to admit that I've never been to the Tulip Festival, but my mom just moved back to Charlevoix (we used to live there for a minute when I was really little) and I visited her recently during their little art fair. One of the best things about Charlevoix is that they have a "community day" where everybody goes out and plants petunias alongside the main roads. It's amazing; there are flowers for miles... -

I am a Minnesotan myself, but a big fan of Da Yoopers, so I figured I'd say hello and ask iff'n yer a Yooper or a Lowper. (I am assuming by the description "a mitten with some other stuff" you be a lowper, but one never knows)

I am a "Lowper", but just barely. I was born on the tip of the middle finger (heh) of the mitten. 'Course these days I live much lower in the state.
You're a Minnesotan you say? I gotta admit most of my meager knowledge of Minnesota comes from listening to "Prairie Home Companion". Do you guys really eat "hot dish"?

The Yoopers like to call the Michiganders that live below the bridge "Trolls" it's not very nice, but they do get called "Yoopers" so I think its fair! :)

Yep. It's state law. Iff'n ya want, I have a killer recipe for Tater-tot Hotdish (most hotdishes require a "noodle" of some sort, but as I think that noodles are gross, I have had to embrace the "tot-dish."

I too, am intrigued....such an evasive answer...
Wikipedia describes it as a baked casserole composed of a starch, a protein, a canned or frozen vegetable, and canned soup. Good stuff!

Indeed... my take on the Tater-tot hotdish includes ground beef, one can each of Cambell's nacho cheese and cream of chicken with mushroom... occasionally I'll use an extra can or the cocwm or a can of coc with garlic ( and a fiesta style frozen vegetable mix (or at least one with black beans in it), and shredded mexiblend cheese... brown up yer beef, mix with veggies and tots in casserole, saving enough tots to make a "crust" top with cheese, bake until tots are done... delish!
