The optical illusion Link demonstrated with the "painter tape" (anamorphosis) is evident in a famous work of art by Hans Holbein the Younger called The Ambassadors:
It might be harder to tell with just a picture of the painting, but if you stand off to the far, far right of the image -- with your eyeline parallel to the wall/surface -- the stretched out blob on the bottom takes the normal shape of a skull. No one is really sure why Holbein put it in the painting, except maybe as a reference to mortality (as skulls have often been used in art history) along with some of the other smaller details of the scene.
I actually could tell that the colors hadn't changed on the stripe one (6:51), because to me it looked plaid no matter which way the black lines went! I wonder if the illusion works better on men vs women (women are apparently better at gauging fine color differences).
Also, that was one of the most adorable wheel intros ever.
