I was spanked with a leash by mum when I was a kid and it was very effective in deterring bad behaviour. However, would I do it with my own kids (when the time comes) - not sure really. Gabriel Iglesias says "threaten what they love (Nintendo Wii)" - WOOT!!! :)

My mom was a public school teacher in a time when corporal punishment was allowed (though she only administered it once, to a kid who gave a substitute grief), and had a scary-looking wooden paddle. We got spanked with a wooden spoon when we were younger, and the paddle only when we were older/bigger (not as old as Rhett though, haha), but either way it was only for a really serious offense or a last resort after time outs and suspension of privileges had no effect. And she was always good about waiting a bit til she was not mad at us so she wouldn't be tempted to take her anger out when spanking (and the waiting made the punishment worse, honestly!) I think it depends on the kid, really (just like all approaches to discipline), so I don't know what I'll do either whenever I have kids.
