None of the GMM Krewe presented one of my favorite odd looking prehistoric creatures . . .
Anisodon grande was a odd-toed ungulate* which sort of resembled a cross between a horse and a gorilla.
They lived in Europe during the late Miocene and stood at about 150 cm and weighed around 600 kg. It used its long forearms and curved claws to hook down leafy tree branches in order to browse, as well as deter Miocene predators such as bear-dogs and saber-toothed cats.
* The order includes three extant [living today] families:
Equidae (horses, donkeys and zebras), Rhinocerotidae (rhinos) and Tapiridae (tapirs)
It's amazing to me that a species more closely related to horses and rhinos looks like it was a few million years of evolution away from walking upright like a human.
