I know that I know that I know . . .

We can know that God is real because He reveals Himself to us in three ways:

  • in creation
  • in His Word
  • and in His Son, Jesus Christ

The most basic proof of God’s existence is simply what He has made.

"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"

~ Romans 1:20

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."

~ Psalm 19:1

For example, our measurement of time is not based on wristwatches, clocks and calendars, but on God’s handiwork. . . the regular rotation of the Earth and passing of seasons as it orbits the sun . . . the radioactive properties of the cesium-133 atom. The universe displays great design, and this argues for a Great Designer.

If you found an encoded message, you would seek out a cryptographer to help break the code. Your assumption would be that there is an intelligent sender of the message, someone who created the code. How complex is the DNA “code” that we carry in every cell of our bodies? Does not the complexity and purpose of DNA argue for an Intelligent Writer of the code?

If you were to find a photograph lying in the middle of a field, you wouldn't assume that it just “appeared” out of nowhere or that it had always existed. Pause for a moment and think about the basic equipment and the steps necessary to create something as simple as a photograph using an old-style camera and film, and you would (rightfully) assume it could never have happened by chance and circumstance. Think about it . . . somebody invented the camera itself, all of its pieces and mechanisms. Somebody invented the specific type of film that it uses, and the chemical process and equipment necessary to develop that captured image onto the paper that you now hold in your hand.  And don't think for a second that the "evolution" from film to digital photography has made the process any less complicated.

Far more complex, consider your television: an image captured by a camera and broken down to digital bits of information, transmitted across the airwaves, decoded by a television receiver and reassembled into a visible image on its screen.

But there is far greater design and precision in the world around us. Shift your thinking for a moment and consider the human eye.

Look out of your window at a flower growing in the garden . . . you can see it's shape and color and how it moves in the breeze . . . your eye is far more complex than a box camera, capturing bits of light reflected off the flower and then via the optic nerve transmitting that information to your brain for interpretation simply so you can enjoy a tiny portion of God's beautiful and wonderous creation.

I'll leave you with one more Bible passage, one of my personal favorites, from Hebrews Chapter 11:

  1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
  2. For by it the elders obtained a good report.
  3. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
  4. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
  5. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
  6. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

It all comes down to this one basic requirement:  BELIEVE

And you know what?  Just because any particular person doesn't believe, that won't make God any less real . . . but then who is missing out?

Great discussion brother. This topic has got me thinking about the new song by For King and Country, "Proof of Your Love." Basically, the chorus says "let my life be the proof, the proof of your love." I think that's exactly what we as Christians are supposed to do; allowing our lives to show the world that God is real.

Well spoken Gumbo! "For I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded, that He is able, to keep that that I've committed unto Him against that day."

Why yes, he is
