Well I have plenty of influences as a cartoonist... iff'n your speaking strictly comic strips...
1. Clavin and Hobbes... what can I say? Watterson set the bar... that's all there is to it... he understands the craft, what it was, and what it could be... he fought hard to get some rights back to the artist and darn it, we owe him
2. Peanuts... Schultz was a genius... and if you'd like to see thesse gems in a new light may I recommend checking out 3eatnuts (where the final panels are removed and the comics become FAR more depressing) I prefer the earlier ones as to his later stuff (and he's Minnesotan too!
3. Pogo... any body whose work influenced Watterson is worth checking out! Go Walt Kelly! (know your comics history folks!)

Calvin and Hobbes
Watterson understand "kiddom" and put it into a comic strip.
Foxtrot
Amend is a nerd. A awesome nerd. Like Watterson appeals to someone's inner kid, Amend appeals to the nerd in all of us.
Lio
This is a fairly small comic, and I really can't describe it. But it might warp your mind a bit. You should look it up.
