This week next week argument!

Hi Guys!
My Partner & I are having a dispute over the phrases “this week” & “next week”. For example, If we were having a discussion on a Sunday night about the following day, I would call it “this Monday” because it is this coming Monday & “next Monday” would be the following Monday, as in Monday week.
My Partner would call the following day “next Monday” because it is the next Monday to occur & he would call the following Monday “the Monday after next”.
We were both hoping you would be able to resolve our argument!

I just had the same argument with my mother! I'm afraid I have to agree with you. "This Monday" is the following Monday and "Next Monday" is the Monday after "This Monday"

At last someone agrees with me! It seems it might be an issue with the phrasing that our parents used whilst they raised us. His mother does the same thing, and my dad does the same thing, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

I'm not entirely sure where i got it from but it seems perfectly logical to me!

Haha, I always have to question myself before I say "this" or "next" because I'm not sure they'll understand which day I'm talking about! I agree though. The way people talk routes back to their parents I believe :)

This is where gesturing is essential. I use the two terms interchangeably to talk about the same Monday. I should really start using "Monday after next".

I agree with you, that "this Monday" refers to the nearest upcoming Monday. His argument for "next Monday" being the next time Monday happens is compelling, but my problem with that logic is that "this Monday" doesn't exist any more. Clearly there must be something that's "this Monday", right? Unless you can only say it on Monday, like "What a fine day it is on this Monday."

However, I usually always frame my "next Monday" statements as "not this Monday, but the next one" just to clarify what I mean and avoid any confusion.

This has always been a big confusing mess to me. I've established a system of being a bit more specific if there is any chance of confusion. I often say, "This coming Monday", or, "The Monday after this Monday".
