The Unfair Flight Of The Conchords Comparison
Hey everyone, I just wanted to throw this out there and see what people think.
I have been having a mild debate with some guy about R&L and FOTC (Flight Of The Conchords) (on the YouTube "Buffet Song" comments).
I have been vehemently defending R&L against the accusation that they are some kind of FOTC rip-off and how FOTC came first and blah blah blah, you get the picture. If I see another "you guys are almost as good as..." remark, I'm going to throw my computer across the room.
Now, my purpose isn't to blast the Conchords, however, I Know that R&L began their musical duo way back in the old school days. Before FOTC came around which apparently was 1998 (according to the guy I am ostensibly arguing with). Infact, the Conchord guys are working actors outside of FOTC. They have appearances on other tv shows and who can forget the Outback Steakhouse commercials?
Does anyone agree with me? Does anyone else get irritated when people throw the Conchords crap at R&L? It's totally baseless. Rhett and Link were First. It's Not the other way around.
As far as I know R&L started messing around with songs and humor way back in high school (or was it even before then?). Didn't I read in an interview that R&L performed at every event they could just to get on stage and sing and make people laugh? Am I taking Crazy pills? Wasn't it after a friends wedding that they decided to try to make a career out of music and humor on the internet (internetainment).
What's your two cents. My argument isn't against FOTC because I hate them or anything. It's just that so many people (posting on YouTube) claim them to be the originals and Rhett and Link are some sort of two-bit knock off. I'm tired of it and want to stand up for R&L.

I personally love the Flight of the Conchords - their HBO series, songs...love 'em! But, I see very little that they share in common with Rhett and Link aside from the fact that they're both comedy duos. Rhett and Link are obviously not FOTC rip-offs.

I agree, they are apples and oranges. That's my point.
It's a few of the posters on YouTube who try to compare them (and always end up saying R&L are the followers and the Conchords are the original).
I just want the comparisons to stop, out of fairness to Rhett and Link.

Oh, I feel the same way! I don't even know who these Conchord guys are, but I can pretty much garuntee that they are not better than R&L (in my book, anyway). Your points are correct.

FOTC don't have allot of clean vids, I'd be careful on what ones you watch.

I enjoy Flight of the Conchords. I wouldn't say I love Flight of the Conchords.
That being said, I think comparisons will always be made, and it's up to you to decide how much energy you want to devote to convincing someone that Rhett & Link did it first. Does it really matter who did it first? 'Cos I'm pretty sure that the guys who actually sang humorous songs for the first time are probably dead by now....
Now we here on the Kommunity know that Rhett & Link do it best, and I'm all for supporting them in that respect and letting other people know how truly good R&L are. But I think you're probably just going to drive yourself nuts trying to convince some commenter on YouTube that R&L did it first. Yes, it's annoying when they get compared to other duos, especially if those comparisons make it seem like they're copying. But when it comes down to it, you're probably not going to change the other guy's mind. All you can do is remind people that Rhett & Link perform original "material" that they created, they do it very well, and have a certain charm that isn't common.
