Serious Post- Insulting the Military Bands

I have been watching Good Mythical Morning for a couple years now and nothing that Rhett and Link have said has upset me... until now. Rhett's comments about the military band were not only ignorant, but an insult to a musical tradition spanning centuries. You don't need to have been in any kind of band to recognize the importance that marching and concert bands have in our culture. It is not a coincidence that almost every high school, college, and community in the country have bands. I have personally spent most of my life in band... concert bands, marching band, and majoring in music. Serving in the military bands is a high honor and the military bands exist to commemorate the most important events in our culture. You will find them at funerals, ceremonies, speeches, and almost any other important event, and our military employs thousands of highly accomplished musicians such as the band in the video. There is no better way that CNN could have honored such an influential moment.

The comment that the band "should be marching around" was also highly ignorant... the military bands serve primarily as ceremonial bands with occasional parade appearances. They carry one of the most important musical legacies in our culture, and the mastery needed to play in one of these ensembles takes decades of hard work and dedication. The band in the video is considered to be one of the highest bands in the military, made up of some of the most talented musicians in the country. They deserve our respect more than Rhett could hope to imagine.
