Rhett really is a time traveler. The painting is by H.A. Brendekilde and is called ‘En landevej’.

I found this image whilst searching the "rhett and link" tag on tumblr. I'm happy I did.

He went back in time to save the man who painted this,because he was about to be attacked by a band of rogue aliens from a galaxy far far away.

When shown in full scale, one can indisputably identify Rhett by his height in comparison to the common folk of the land.

The people that he is talking to are actually fellow time travelers from the year 22222.568.
he's telling them about the convention of time travelers that will be held in London , England in the year 1234.
unfortunately at the convention the time travelers were attacked by their evil counterparts , that were created by the break in time when Rhett and Link went back in time to save merryweather Neal.
A raging battle went on till Rhett and a woman named Mary nether went to the year 1971 to enlist the help of leneord nimoy. Nimoy later had his memory erased of that event by an evil time traveler named Dr. Dwight, so he does not recall the incident.

I am currently writing a comic book. I started a discussion asking for volunteers to do the artwork cause my art skills are zero.
The discussion is rhett and link comics , I think.
