Onions are much stronger. If this is about strength the the Onions win. 

Tomatoes taste better. If this is about taste then tomatoes win.

I don't like tomatoes unless they're obliterated into a sauce, so I'll have to go with onions on this one. (As long as they aren't raw.)

onions + tomatoes + jalapeños + cilantro + lime juice + sale + pepper = YUM!

Tomatoes can be made into a lot of things and add a lot of flavor, but so do onions... On one side, we have tomato soup, on the other, we have fried onion rings... Not sure.
