Thanks so much, I really appreciate you guys answering this on the kast! And you were dead on about me hearing it on the CD on the way home. Haha. And now for my interpretation...
I think the beginning story about going to the water hole is about you guys having adventures and such when you were younger. You would egg each other on and even if you got in trouble everything would be ok in the end. The chorus is saying that having a true friend is having one that sticks by you no matter what situations you two may come across. The middle about the brier patch is about you both going through some rough stuff but you stuck together and made it out. You were closer friends and better people because of those times. The last part where the porcupine loses his prickliness is kind of the end of the friendship/adventure. The friends have to say goodbye and even though it's really hard they can look back at all the fun times they had together and know they both had a real friend.
I'm probably off but that's just the way I see it. :)
but then he regained his prickliness...?

FYI - "A Tribute to Friends" was from this early release:
from the Album I'm Sorry, What Was That? (Live in the Living Room)
Here is a link to the RhettandLinkast videos still available online, but since Rhett didn't give an episode title in his answer I didn't have time to search through them all for the specific one that aired live on 03-Sep-2009.
