Home of Rhett & Link fans - the Mythical Beasts!

Today in IT class, we were learning about Stop Motion videos. Of course, I suggested we watch T-Shirt War as we had 10 minutes to spare but the teacher said no. I watched it on my laptop anyway. My friend sitting next to me leaned over and said "Rhett & Link". Being the idiot I am, I hugged her and squealed (I'm so lame. I had done this to her previously when I played "My OCD" on the piano and she recognised it). She said (and I quote) -

"Oh my gosh, Grace! They're just two middle-aged guys who post videos to the internet. It's kind of sad actually"

This was me (look at Link before and after when Rhett says "you're not being smart!") when she said this

My response was horrible as I didn't have 10 seconds to come up with a comeback (hehe) - "Well they're my Taylor Swift and I'm not kidding" (one of my other friends is absolutely obsessed with TS so I just said that. Her fanship and my fanship are very different. I said the "I'm not kidding" bit as basically everyone I know is oblivious to the extent of my fanship except you guys. Whoop-dee-doo).

In the next class, I thought about the whole "ordeal" and I tried to think of better responses. I thought of many that were much better than what I said but I guess I just panicked. How would you have responded? Have you ever been in a situation where someone "insulted" your fanship of RL or insulted RL and if so, how did you respond? I know she didn't actually insult anyone too much but still. It hurt me way more that it needed to... BYMB!

P.S. I know "fanship" isn't a word

P.P.S. I have seen the comeback GMMore. I wish I did say "are you stupid enough to repeat the stupid thing you just said?" but I assume that if I did say that, we would've fought and I'm not fond of having conflict with friends (I like fighting (and winning) with people I hate)

Exactly. I probably should've said that...

If I had to explain what they meant to me, I would need Jodie Foster's voice, three hours to figure out everything and an hour to actually say everything.

Jodie's voice is so nice (especially in the movie Contact).

I tend to freak out too if someone knows R&L so don't worry haha. But anyway, I just wonder why she thought posting videos on the internet is a sad thing, because it sounds like fun for me :D That's actually why I don't like talking about youtubers around people, because most of them do not understand how it works. But if anyone ever "insults" anyone I like I just don't say anything. I like to avoid useless fights :D

Send your friend a link to this Forbes article about Rhett and Link/Mythical Entertainment's annual earnings and ask if she still thinks it's "sad" after that. xP

Many people who are not familiar with the current state of "the business of YouTube" don't realize that people upload videos to the Internet as a viable business venture these days. They might still be under the impression that YouTube/the Internet is for silly animal videos and kids just messing around in front of a camera. YouTube is now an alternative space to television and big movie production; just because Rhett and Link's work doesn't currently air on national networks such as NBC or cable channels (although they have been on TV before with Commercial Kings), that doesn't mean they aren't successful, recognized entertainment figures with a large and dedicated fan following. I think in their case, the numbers speak for themselves!

THIS. :)

And, I clicked on that link, but it came up as translation page for "L" on duckduckgo.com. ... ??

Haha, well that's weird...here's the actual link!

I sent her a bit of the article.

I think she'll think that I'm obsessive (which is correct) as I sent it 16 hours after she said it.

3 words for anyone who doesn't give R&L and GMM a chance . . . "SAD FOR YOU"

I honestly don't know what I would have said. I probably wouldn't have said anything, but that's me. You had a good comeback given the context. Taylor's just a 20 something year old girl singing and shaking her butt in front of hundreds of people, like every other singer. Why would anyone see that? lol :) AND how about all the middle-aged actors in movies and tv shows that people fangirl/boy about?!?! NO difference there, really.

If she only knew how innovative they are and how far R&L have come in using the internet as a vessel for a different form of entertainment in a time when it was really young and still developing, she'd understand where you come from. To compare the two, though, both R&L and Taylor have become effective in the way media and music has changed and grown over time, both are a huge influencers of their art, but Taylor just happens to be more well-known in the world, but that's because it's music and she tours and she's out there. You have to find R&L or be recommended by someone to watch them. They aren't so popular or well-known, realistically. I mean, if you know about YouTube, you know about them, but if not, you don't. And that's okay. And if your friend doesn't understand that, that's okay, too. To each their own. But she should have respected your interest and excitement about them. In my opinion, real friends don't mock their other friends about their interests.

We need more middle age men (or just generally people over 30) posting to Youtube. Youtube is turning into a creche. That's not a comeback, btw.

Most my friends just tell me they don't know who they are and then they usually humor me by allowing a lengthy explanation. My husband is the only one that says anything negative and I think it is only because he is tired of me talking about them and having them on our TV non stop. For instance, I wanted to tell him so bad about the Milli Vanilli debacle they reminded me of today and how it was strange that we lived through it in real time and how it is considered "history" and so many fans had never heard about it until today...he cuts me off halfway into the sentence and says, " I don't want to hear about those guys anymore..( and then he usually makes up something to get under my skin) ' they made me mad the other day, they were very disrespectful".  I have gotten to the point that I just tell him to shut up. Not nice but that is my only comeback.

Maybe say this is something i really love and you don't have to like it but I'd rather you at least try it before you immediately judge it.  If you want i can give you some recommendations about what to watch (which goes back to my issue of videos to introduce people to Rhett and Link) since there is such a variety of videos to enjoy.  You don't have to like them but I really do and it very much upsets me when you insult them especially when you haven't even given them a shot.  Its the same way it upsets you when I say how i don't like ____________.

Im sorry thats all i can think of.  I have this happen all the time and it really stinks

It's been ages since this was posted but I just wanted to say that today, I was watching GMM with my semi-MB friend and two non-MB friends and one of my non-MB friends called some of the GMM titles and content "clickbait" and seemed to be unimpressed with GMM.

I just stuttered a little bit and couldn't think of anything to say.

*MB - Mythical Beast

Do you think some GMM titles/content are click-bait?
