going on a first date with the "hot" girl you've just barely met over the internet and driven to the Tastee Freeze for ice cream treats by your two creepy uncles in their big dual-control SUV . . .

Tastee-Freeze used to be one of our family favorites back when I was a kid (ancient history).  Basic burger and fries, but the VERY BEST soft serve ice cream on the planet.  And why not? After all, they're the guys who invented it!  My brother and two sisters would always go for the chocolate dipped vanilla cone, but mine had to be a pineapple shake.

Virtually every mid-sized town in Lousiana had a Tastee-Freeze location back in the day, but only one location in my home state still serves their product today . . . at the Weinerschnitzel on Highland Road in Baton Rouge, just outside of the LSU Campus.  Gotta get me some next time I'm in town.

 

 

The stores today look very different from this, which I remember from my youth . . .

Tastee-Freez was founded in 1950 in Joliet, Illinois by Leo S. Moranz and Harry Axene. Moranz invented a soft serve pump and freezer which enabled the product, and their Harlee Manufacturing Company produced the machines which franchisees would buy and use in their respective locations. Originally stores focused on iced milk and other frozen dairy-based desserts. Expansion of the brand was rapid in the 1950s; in 1952, there were 315 locations, and by 1957 there were nearly 1800 locations. Fewer than fifty exist today.

Newer locations have a larger fast food menu, far beyond the original offerings. Since 2003, the company has been owned by Galardi Group Franchise & Leasing, a franchisor based in California that also owns Wienerschnitzel hot dog restaurants. Wienerschnitzel has begun to incorporate Tastee-Freez soft serve products in their approximately 350 restaurants.

I think Alex was way more embarrassed than her...he got really red at some points, haha.
