Thanis stood on the edge of the dock, staring at Manhattan from Liberty Island. He wondered how so many people went through their lives with no self defense training, or at least staying fit. He considered the mastery of martial arts to be the highest accomplishment possible.
"Hello, Karson." He said, hearing foot steps behind him and seeing the white cape out of the corner of his eye. Thanis turned towards the old man and bowed his head slightly. Karson, as usual, wore his hood down. And though he was the groups Tactician, anyone who could see his tired eyes and unshaven beard that Karson had see many battles.
"Thanis," He said. "I was told you were out last night."
"So what of it?"
"It is not good to be on the mainland unless you have a mission. It is unwise to bring attention to yourself."
"I know. But it is how I relax." Thanis said, turning to leave. Karson sighed, but said nothing.
Diamond stopped in mid-sentence, her hands trembling.
Ace came to her side, concerned, "What?"
"S-some one was here. I-I can feel it." Her eyes locked on the main wall. "Here. Ace, that pesky kid came in and I can sense something else. Someone else was there."
Ace shook his head, "That's crazy. No one else has been here. No one can find us."
Diamond slapped his arm. "Why do you have to be so arrogant! Just because the police can't fund us doesn't mean other supernaturals can't! Just look!" She strode toward the wall, then stopped and waved her hand over it. As it always did, it became invisible only to her and foreign substances became known. "Right there." She pointed to a blue patch. "That's grease and Carbon Dioxide. Someone was either so close to our wall that it picked up on their heavy breathing or they touched the wall and had just eaten. Either way, someone was near our wall and that someone could have been anyone. We need to move."
"Dye, don't you think you might be over reacting just a little?" He said showing the distance of an inch between his fingers.
"NO!" She screamed. "Ace, just-" She grabbed her arm and snapped her fingers. Ace felt a slight tug on his feet but landed just fine in their safe house. "Just stop complaining and let me protect us."
They were leaving. No. This was not good. Delia could not fail another mission, especially not after she’d worked so hard.
Facts. She had to think facts. What had she seen? What could tell her where they were going? She needed to clear her head. Anything to help focus.
After taking a deep breath, Delia brought her hands to cover her eyes. With the world blocked out, she could concentrate on when Ace walked past the wall. Then the voices. A girl. “...he could wipe you out by blinking.”
Probably an exaggeration, but only one group was that powerful. Who of them could it have been? Most of the black cloaks had left New York, except--
Oh no.
Not him, anyone but him. She slapped herself on the forehead, trying to make her memories be wrong, bring up something else. Anything else but him.
But all her thoughts could come up with was: Find him or fail the mission.
She reached into her cloak and disappeared. An instant later, she was on a dock, a black figure standing near the edge.
“Thanis,” she called. And immediately wished she hadn’t
Thanis' head shot up at the sound of Delia's voice. He turned around with red, narrow eyes. A hidden blade quietly slide down his out arm.
"What do you want, Delia?" He snapped angrily.
(Aimee sad I could post for here. So here is mine and her post.')
“I need to talk to you,” Delia said. He clearly wasn’t pleased--those eyes flashed darker than usual. “I know, I hate it too, but I wouldn’t come here if it wasn’t necessary.” Still no answer. “Hear me out.”
“Speak quickly.”
“I’m on a mission--following two young people. I have reason to believe you almost beat one of them up earlier today. He and the girl, I had them, but they found me out somehow. They disappeared. And I don’t know where they went.”
“That isn’t my job. It’s yours. Do it right.” Thanis turned to face her for the first time. “Or are you incapable of that?”
Delia sighed. She knew this would be difficult, but it’d been years since she’d had to deal with his obstinacy. “Thanis, I can do my job. As a matter of fact, this is a part of my job. I am simply asking you what you know so I can better perform it.”
“The boy has magic. Powerful magic. Never met the girl. Though I can track the teleportation magic. Surprised you can’t.”
He was grating on her nerves, and he most likely knew it. “What you fail to understand, Thanis, is that I could track it if I wanted to. The traces left behind are obvious. It would be unwise to enter the situation without first gathering intelligence, though. They know I’m onto them. It’s about time I knew a little more about them.”
“It’s simple. You find them, and I kill them. So find them.” Thanis replied. “Or should I do it?”
“I wouldn’t trust you with this mission. Your impulsiveness could get you into trouble. You tried to beat him up--it’s your fault they’re on edge in the first place. If you’re needed, I’ll let you know.” She decided she didn’t care what he had to say--anything she needed to know she could find out for herself. She reached into her cloak for the void. Her eyes turned crimson and she smiled. “Until then, stay out of my way.” With that, she vanished.
Kill them.... she can't kill them...dammit! Shadow never liked situations like these, they were always so delicate and touchy. Backing away, with out a sound, she had to report what she had heard. She was on the yacht below them. She analysed the simplest route out. She would need to get to that dock, but if she were seen it would be the end of her. The simplest way would be to back hand spring over the edge of the boat, catching herself on the dock and making a run for it- but that was out of the question. She couldn't risk being seen. They didn't call her Shadow for nothing. A row of boats were behind the yacht, maybe she could make her self unseen that way. Well, she'd be unseen but noisy. Weighing the pros and cons she went with the louder and slightly more difficult task. Shadow flexed her hands a few times in her fingerless, black, leather gloves and checked to see Thanis standing there alone. With a running start, Shadow misjudged the distance before the first and second boats. The current was a factor she hadn't accommodated in her plan. Quickly, switching from a backhand spring to a back aerial walkover she landed just over the lip of the next boat. Too close, too close, too close! Arching her back, shifting her weight to her heel and with help from the current, her added 135 pounds to the front of the boat didn't make a dramatic shift in the boats standing condition. Looking back up at Thanis, he was still looking over the ocean, unknowing of her existence. There were two more boats... but she couldn't take them. It would take her too much physical effort to make those distances. Adapting herself, she made her way to the tip off the boat, farthest away from Thanis. Alright... come on, you can do this. Making a jump for it, Shadow latched on to the side of the dock, her hands, luckily, supported by her gloves. Then, swinging back and forth a few times she did a simple front pike somersault and landed gracefully on her feet. Squatting, low to the ground, her breathing hushed, she faded into the shadow of the moon.
A knocking came upon their door. Ace had fallen asleep just a few minutes before, so as Diamond was finishing up her systems check, she went to see who it was. Shadow, a very stealthy woman, stood there in the night. Diamond opened the door and let Shadow in to the scanning area. Shadow stood with her arms outstretched and her legs apart as the scanner picked up any traces and metals and removed them from her. After she was decontaminated, Shadow was allowed in.
Diamond was forward, "Why are you here? We don't exactly like being visited at one in the morning."
Shadow laid a CD down in her hand. "Someone is trying to kill you and Ace."
Diamond took the disk in her hand and looked up at her confused.
"I may have been spying on two, rather influential, people that want to exterminate you."
She didn't like being in the safe house of Ace and Diamond, in fact she thought Ace was an arrogant teenager who needed to grow up. Diamond though, she believed was very intelligent, under the right employment, she could go far.
Diamond looked at Shadow, confused. "I thought you were against us. You have done everything you can to torment Ace when he out in the field and when you come here to confront us, you just try to grill me to work for your employer because you think I am too good for him!"
There is a hallway off to Diamond's right, and in the darkness of the hallway Ace was listening.
Shadow smiled, "Diamond, you are a brilliant, brilliant young mind and, when you watch this video, you will take up my offer." Diamond glared up at Shadow. "You need to come and work with me, not for me, with me. Think of my strengths, then think of yours. I wouldn't keep you penned up here."
Secretly, Shadow wanted to have Diamond work with her, and once she did she already had a plan.
Having the feeling that Ace was watching, Shadow whispered, "They just want Ace, they don't even know you exist. Leave him to them... and come to me."
With the CD in her hand, Diamond looked down at it. Ace is all I have...
"I would appreciate it if you left, Shadow."
Shadow replied, "Just watch it."
Then respecting her wishes, Shadow left. Ace didn't know what to make of the situation. Someone, two someones, were trying to kill Ace but they didn't know Diamond existed because she did all the background decorating and Shadow wanted to have Diamond give him to the people who were trying to kill him. He didn't know how to process all of that. Still, hiding in the shadow of the hall way, he leaned against the wall.
Diamond slipped the CD into her computer and hit play. She watched a cloaked man and a woman talk for a while.
I am on a mission-- following two young people... I had them...they disappeared... you find them, and I kill them....
Diamond kept replaying the dialog over and over. She listened for anything that could give her a clue to who they were. The hooded man was clearly the one that had fought with Ace earlier but the woman... she was so familiar but so unusual. I had them... they disappeared. She replayed that sentence. I had them... they disappeared. She was the woman she had felt by the door. Diamond thought, I need to be unseen.... I need to be unseen!
