Hearing little old South Dakota mentioned is always a surprise. As mentioned, the Pine Ridge Reservation is certainly a stark contrast to the Lumbee areas featured here.

Here's a clip from a 20-20 episode titled "FREELOADERS" that I happened upon this week. Contains some interviews and content on the Lumbee Indians, including tribal council member Ben Chavis . . .

The most touching part of the video is when Link gave "mouth to mouth" to that poodle, and the dog came back to life. If it were not for that heroic effort, that dog would be dead. Even though Link worked on the dog for 3 hours, he never gave up. And that is the theme of this movie - Never giving up! And then to find out later that the poodle was lost by Ms Locklear years earlier, well that was an ironic twist that took us all by surprised. They found her, but she lost the dog and in the final…

Teresa,
According to Wikipedia, "On June 3, 2009, the US House of Representatives voted 240 to 179 for federal recognition for the Lumbee tribe, acknowledging that they are the descendants of the Cheraw tribe. The vote will go on to the US Senate.[1]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumbee)

So it looks like yes, they have made some progress. But as near as I can tell from my quick google search, they're not there yet...
But most of all, I sat on the edge of my seat at the end, waiting to see if the bill had passed. And, man... that is so disheartening. I really enjoyed getting to know the Lumbee tribe. That's just sad.
One of my favorite scenes was one that didn't make it into the movie. Watching the guys learn and perform the "pleasure pop" was priceless! Of course since I'm a complete sap, the moment when they actually found Ms. Locklear was extremely touching. I got a little misty.

But, my all-time favorite line from the movie is "As I was riding in the back of that pickup full of puppies, looking back at Link mounted on a lawnmower on a trailer being pulled at 50 miles an hour, it hit me; he probably should be wearing a helmet. AND something special has happened." It captures the absurdity of the situation and hints at the serendipity of the whole journey. Good stuff!
