I have been a driver for almost 12 years. I've never gotten a speeding ticket until This past Tuesday night Sept 22, 2009. The police officer said I was go 50 in a 35. I was not going that fast.
I always look at my speed when a police passes me. SO, I thought I was safe. Then I looked in the rear view mirror and he turned around and then there were those pretty spinning lights. I pulled over and got my registration out and then my license. He said I was going 50 in a 35 and talking on my cell phone (I don't use a cell phone while driving) I am a dinosaur when it comes to cell phones. I told him I wasn't on a cell phone. In fact I had to search where it was. It's my emergency phone only. He took all my stuff to his car and I was scared becasue this was a first for me. I had my 2 year old in the back seat. She says, "Hi!" Of course he didn't reply. (How Rude). He came back like what seemed hours and gave me the ticket. He could have charged me for not signing my car registration( I had no clue I was suppose to sign that). He didn't charge me for that because he's a good guy not like the other police he mentioned. The fine came to $154.00. He shared with me I can go to court to get it reduced. Why didn't he just do it there? That's my 1st speeding ticket story. What is yours?

Oh, so you want a peek at the dark side of the E-Ministrator, eh?

I've been a New Yorker all my life...land of the 55 mph limit. I have habitually pushed it to 70 on the expressway. So, when I moved to Florida where the highway limit is often 70, that gave me "permission" to average 80-83. I was doing 82 on the way home from a bible study of all things, when I got pulled over for the first time in FL (after living here 2 years). I mentioned to the officer that I had never been pulled over in this state. He mentioned to me that the limit on the road I was on was 65 and took my license off to check me out. When he came back, he asked, "Did you say you've never been pulled over in the state of Florida?" When I said that was correct, he let me go and just told me to slow down.

So, 3 months later when I got stopped again by a cop waiting on the far side of a bridge spanning the Intracoastal Waterway for people who didn't notice that the speed limit was posted at 45 mph on a flippin' 4-lane road, I figured I could probably get away with that line again. After all, that first incident was just between me and the officer, right? So, I said, "Gee officer, I've never even been pulled over in the state of Florida." He didn't miss a beat, and came back with, "Well, there's a first time for everything." To be honest, I just laughed and took the ticket.

Speeding tickets are a right of passage in Jacksonville. There's no state income tax here, so this is a prime source of revenue. It's almost unheard of that you live here and have NOT gotten one. But, I've only gotten one and I'd like to try to keep it that way!
Good story Lynn. I to want to keep it at just one. I use the cruse control now.

I got my one and only speeding ticket back when I was 18. And it wasn't a very good story.

But I have been pulled over many times. (Not 'cause I'm a bad driver. I'm definitely a good driver. Definitely.) My old car was, well, old. And after about the 6th year that I owned it, I realized it blue-booked for about $400 in mint condition, let's just say I gave up on making any cosmetic repairs. Not that I was ghetto about it; I used clear Duct tape to hold the passenger side door shut, and clear zip-ties to hold the front bumper on... But I got pulled over many times for "fixit issues".

There was one incident of "bad" driving... I was driving to work at about 3:30 in the a.m. and went through what was always a flashing yellow light at that time of day. Except I noticed (as I was entering the intersection) that the light was flashing red. Started to slam on the brakes, then realized that I was halfway through, and stopping at that point would be both ridiculous and an exercise in futility. I made it about half a block, then saw a car pull onto the empty road behind me. And I knew he was a cop. He let me cruise along at 30mph for another 1/2 mile before he hit the lights. I pulled over, rolled down my window, and waited for him to walk up and hit me in the eyes with the inevitable beam from his mag-lite. Once he got to my window, and before he could say anything, I blurted out, "I realized what I did right as I was doing it."

I must have looked as guilty as I felt, 'cos instead of asking me where I was coming from at that time of night, he just started laughing. And after I asked him "isn't that light always a flashing yellow?" he laughed again and said, "not on Sundays anymore. They changed it last week, and I did the exact same thing you just did." Then he just waved and said "have a good night." I was stunned; no request for license, registration or any of that. Ypsi cops have definitely been good to me over the years...
Loved your story. Do you still have the car or is in car heaven?

Aw, thanks!

'Lil Buster is prolly in car heaven now. I traded it in when I got the car I'm currently leasing. They gave me a hundred bucks. Which wasn't bad considering the only things that worked right on the car at that point were the seatbelts in the backseat.

I can honestly say that I have never been pulled over by a cop for any reason. My one and only ticket was from a minor accident that I take full blame for the summer after I graduated high school... four years ago.
OK, here is the ending of the story of my speeding ticket. Today November 4th I went before the judge. I could either contest it or do a deferment. I chose the deferment because if I don’t get a ticket with in a year it will be taken off my record. So in stead of paying $ 154.00 I paid $150.00. I was so nervous I didn’t know what do. The guy behind me got his ticket canceled because the officer didn’t file the papers. I wanted to fight it but my nerves were shot. My palms were sweating I had bathroom issues(I know TMI). I just wanted to get out of there and home with my family. Moral of this story is do not go faster then the sign says, even if you have no clue what the sign said in the first place.
Funny you should bring this up! My husband and I have a long-standing disagreement about whether or not it is important to abide by traffic laws. I have never been pulled over (That does NOT, however, mean I haven't been guilty of speeding!). My mother has never been pulled over, neither has my father or my step-father. I'm pretty sure I'm not directly related to ANYONE that has ever been pulled over, actually. My husband's family, on the other hand, is from New York, and they seem to think that speeding tickets are common place - not unlike having to periodically pay to get one's refrigerator fixed. A fact of life. I'm pretty sure my husband, at the ripe old age of 28, has gotten at least 10 speeding tickets in his lifetime. His dad usually gets at least one a year I would say. His brother and our sister-in-law have 17 between the two of them.

My husband, Steve, just got a $120 ticket for going 37 in a 20. I sort of let that one slide, though. It's a little more understandable. I must say he has toned his driving down quite a bit since we've gotten married, and I am very thankful for that!

Disclaimer: I mentioned that my husband's family is from New York simply because they, and most of their friends seem to have the same opinion about speeding tickets. I'm assuming this is a regional thing, but maybe not! I guess that wasn't really much of a disclaimer, was it?...
a very poetical one... I was watching the moon, which was so huge and so big... I totally forgot to watch my speed... red flash and I was "WTF" did just happen...
