My dad found a coin in his office, and gave it to me.... I don't know what it's made of, or where he found it. It's kind of heavy, and bigger then any coin I've ever seen.... Even a silver dollar. (I know how big those are; my brother has one) I put it in my hand for comparison. It says, "American US Legion" on it.

I'm not sure....That's what I'm trying to find out.....
Okay...then yes, it is a Vietnam Memorial Coin issued by the U.S. American Legion. As Gumbo said, it appears to be a "challenge coin." I can't find any other information about it other than some eBay and Etsy listings.
It is NOT an official coin released by the U.S. Mint, so it cannot be used as U.S. currency. There was a silver dollar released by the Mint in 1994 commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in D.C., but the one you have is obviously not the 1994 coin.
It says, "VIETNAM The Wall" on the other side... It has a guy standing next to some rocks, in front of a wall...
In front of the wall, there are 4 American flags; 2 closer to the man, and 2 closer to the wall.
I think it is what is called a CHALLENGE COIN . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin . . . check it also against one of the several listed for sale at these sites . . . although if it has some age on it may take a bit more investigation since it might not be sold as new stock any longer
It looks like it could be one of these, or some similar commemorative coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-U-S-AMERICAN-LEGION-Vietnam-The-Wal...
Does it have an image of the Vietnam War Memorial on the other side?
