Well... I hope you aren't opposed to receiving advice from a high schooler, but if you aren't...
I have recently started at a new high school, midway through (I'm a Junior btw) and it is a bit awkward. Now this is going to be a bit difficult, so you will have to be a bit more peppy than usual, like when you see a group of people having a conversation about something you know about, just stick in a little comment like, "Oh yeah, I liked that movie too" or "yeah, what's your major" At first it will feel awkward, but inevitably it will lead to more and more openings for you to reveal yourself. It's not easy, but it does work.
