Any chance of having a Mythicon in New York City as well? :)  There must be other fans here.

Looks like it's about a 250 mile spread, so that would make sense to me.

It could be there are others even several hours away who might consider a weekend trip to the city for sightseeing with a bit of mythicality and lunch with some beastly buddies thrown in as an added bonus.

Are you up for planning and hosting in NYC? if you make a plan, I'll build the page.

Hi Gumbo,

I would have been willing to host, but cannot make such a commitment at this time. I cannot even promise to attend. My father was recently diagnosed with late-stage cancer, and I have no way of knowing what his condition will be come July.

That being said, I'd be glad to engage in planning for as much and as long as I am able. Forgive me, but I've already started trying to identify NYC-based Mythical Beasts (using the data on their profiles and the international map).

I wouldn't presume to do more than that without permission from an admin-type person, but my vague intention was to draft a message to send each of them in order to gauge interest and see whether anyone would be in a position to host.

I have an idea of a place that can be used for a meetup (Madison Park- it's lovely, has a great burger joint w vegetarian options, and free Wifi in case we decide to do a Skype session as I've seen alluded to in other threads), but am wide open to other ideas, and want to take into consideration the possibility of rain. Also, now that you mentioned people traveling in, we'd likely also want to take into account the meetup's proximity to Penn Station, from where travelers are most likely to arrive.

It's hard for me to imagine, in a city as populous as NYC, that I couldn't find *someone* willing and able to host. I completely understand, though, if you would rather wait until such a person is identified before building  the page (especially considering the fact that your only interested party thus far is a newbie here).

Let me know what you think!

@ Anita ~ You can most certainly be the coordinator to organize the NYC meet-up.  Hopefully somone in the city will step up as your Co-host in case you are unable to attend on the actual day, and two or more working together to solicit attendees will certainly be more productive.

As an outsider who has traveled to NYC numerous times, I understand that only a local can effectively plan a successful event in that crazy town. So for now, and as long as you're able to handle it, you're definitely the beast in charge of this one. It looks like you've already given a good bit of thought into this thing.

THANK YOU for your willingness to serve and help others to have an enjoyable event, even knowing you might not attend the final event yourself.  All prayers and well wishes for your Dad and the entire family as you help him through this battle.

That's great! In that case, yes, please consider me the beast in charge. I expect to be able to rally interest and find a co-host for support and to rely upon in case I need to drop out of the event itself. (Hopefully not.)  Also...a sign was mentioned... so ideally my co-host has some artistic ability... ha.

Would a NYC meetup be on a separate MythiCon discussion than the Syracuse one? Or else, what page were you referring to earlier?
I appreciate your prayers for my dad and my family. We certainly need them!

Since you've already begun the postings here, I've converted this thread to NYC and will move the upstate / Syracuse group to a new one.

The park itself is easy to map, and my guess is that you're talking about meeting near the Shake Shack . . . is this the right location you mentioned?

Most of the meetings are held at a mall food court, which gives protection from the weather and also several options for diners, but in your case there are probably several other restaurants and even street venders to choose from at the site.

That is indeed the place.

Upon further consideration, it may not be ideal. (So sorry!) If someone doesn't like Shake Shack, they're sorta out of luck. The dining options range from somewhat expensive to even more expensive (as is, sadly, the case in much of Manhattan. Perhaps I can scope out the place and ascertain street cart options.). Most significantly, there's no place to shelter in case of rain except for expensive restaurants.

Stereotypically, New Yorkers exhibit a bit of disdain when it comes to malls. (Unfortunately, downstate NYers can be snobby about a lot of things. Not all of us, but the reputation is not entirely unearned.) We only have one mall in Manhattan, most locals dislike it, and it doesn't have a food court anymore.

I was about to suggest the South Street Seaport, but just googled their site and realized that their food court on the Pier shut down five months ago! (I’m so disappointed.) The only food court I can think of now is the one in Korea Town, which only has Korean and Japanese lunch options.  Also, depending on how large the group gets, space can definitely be an issue. Also no wifi. Sigh.

So, thus far, Madison Square Park is still the best option I can think of, barring poor weather.  Bryant Park could be a better alternative because of sheltered areas, but I will have to check out the food options. From what I remember, they’re relatively pricey (for example, $9 gets you a tuna sandwich at ‘wichcraft) and also more limited and spaced further apart.

This is going to need more thought. How large the group gets has a great impact on our options. Places that are less expensive are generally also less convenient to get to. Wifi may need to be sacrificed, unless someone has a travel router (which is possible), or we pop into a Starbucks. But now I’m just rambling.  Anyway, break over, it’s back to work.

The main reason I hesitate about Madison Square Park is because of lack of weather protection. So perhaps the venue can be listed as to be determined. Or leave it as is for now. Whatever is better for you!

Got it! I'll spare you the dissertation; suffice it to say that after some reconnaissance I settled on:

Food Gallery 32

https://foursquare.com/v/food-gallery-32-new-york-ny/4d14ee31b15cb1...

West 32nd Street, between Broadway and 5th Ave

It has three floors, and the first is most crowded, so I propose meeting on the 3rd Floor

This place is right off of Herald Square, very close to Penn Station and several subway lines.

It's a very NewYork-ey styled place.  Most of the pics on their review page looked great, until I got to this one . . .

Don't know what that was all about, but think I'll wait until you have a final, final, FINAL spot selected.  True that there are very few places in Manhattan outside of a public park or rented banquet hall that will allow a group of any size to gather for an event . . . especially without advance notice of your intent . . . you might have your work cut out for you on that end.

Good thing that you're starting out six months early, right?

Oh. Well, then... back to the drawing board.  :)

Yesterday was my first time visiting them. It was open, and gave every impression of being clean.

The NYC Dept of Health gave them a "B" in Sept: http://a816-restaurantinspection.nyc.gov/RestaurantInspection/Searc... Nothing more recent available online yet, though there must be one. A little digging, and I found that they were shut down in November 2013 for almost two weeks before reopening.

There are so many establishments with an "A" that I personally avoid eating at a "B" one (by law, the grade must be openly displayed at the location), though I've heard it isn't that bad of a grade. I forgot to look for Food Gallery's grade- too caught up in the newness of the place, I was.

BUT in the case of a Mythical meet-up, regardless of their current grade, I do believe the stigma will have to rule out.

...Did you know there are no food courts, in the traditional sense, in all of Manhattan? I do, now.

But I still have ideas.

@ Gumbo123 - May I ask that the Madison Square Park location/website be removed? I apologize for the back-and-forth. I will give you the final place after I've been able to confer with other interested parties, but I know for sure that Madison Square Park will definitely not be the location, and don't want anyone visiting this thread to be confused.

Thank you for all that you're doing to aid with MythiCon planning all over the globe.

Hi Marisa,

That's great!

Yes, I definitely have every intention of making this work. Nerd that I am, I even created a venn diagram to compare the merits and drawbacks of some prospective locations. It's on notebook paper now, and I don't know when I'll have time to recreate it digitally. Tomorrow, I'll just scan the handwritten version I have so that there's something to share. (Beware, I created it on the subway, so it's sloppy.)
