I have gotten a lot of great tips from just reading this thread. Awesome.

I would be interested in the ages of the kids being homeschooled here. Mine are starting Pre-K and starting 1st. I feel like several of us might be right about the same stage. Anyone else? How old are your kids?

OK yesterday went very well. We had to do school late in the day because of guest. I thought, "O, boy, will he give me a hard time"? Not at all. I did the reading for his math and it went great. We are trying to finish last years math book to get ready for this years. Thank you for the tip it truly worked. I am going to hae a great year with all of this support. God bless you all.

Tasha I will look into that program. Thank you for sharing...

I haven't started our school year yet, but I have two second graders and a little guy starting kindergarten. So... I will probably be facing some of the same issues. My 2nd graders still need help reading. I agree with Christine, that its okay to help them with reading when its not "reading time" so they can focus on the math.
I also did Reading Reflex with my kids in between K and 1st. It is a bit different than a phonics approach and helped them with sounding things out, recognizing phonograms, etc. So, when they struggle with reading, I try to refer back to some of the things they learned in Reading Reflex.
My 7 yo son "melts down" too when he is having a hard time. I have to reassure him a lot that he will get it, it just takes practice.
Hope things smooth out for you, Jeanette!

Thank you Christine. I will try that tomorrow. I will have him look at the words when I read to him, so he can get an idea what they look like when I read them.

I will report tomorrow how it went.

Take care and God bless you for your kindness.

How school went today. It started off ok until my son had to read for me the questions in his math book. He gets down on himself if he can't read a word. for example today he had to read the word "think". I asked him if he remembered what the "th" sound is. He got discouraged and had to go to his room to get his attitude in check. He came back in about 5 minutes and we tried it again but I read and he followed along. He did a little better and we got through math in an hour which should have taken maybe 1/2 the time.

Hello Christine.
My son gets distracted ad doesn't do his assigned work I have for him. We are going through explode the code and 1st grade math. He finished the Explode the code 3 but the math he needs to finish. His reading isn't fully there yet. This is one of the reasons he needs me.

Does anyone have a 7 year old boy who will be 8 in Sept? That would be me.
I am in need of some advice. My son is going into the 2nd grade who can't seem to do his work without me right there. I have a 2 almost 3 year old(Dec). She needs me as well. We tried to do school during her naps but she is not taking them as much.

Any Advice would be very appreciated.

I have to tell you, I think we are all really going to enjoy this Homeschool group once school starts again... Don't you? We can all help each other, complain, vent, or share successes!!! I like it!
