Hey, there,

I'm trying to write a poem for my best friend for her birthday, which has already passed but she knows it'll be late because I had other matters at the time. It will go along with an art piece I'll create (they don't have to relate) and I need some help writing it. She's not on the Komm and I thought there'd be some interest in this with so many of you creative people on here!

I've dabbled with poetry before, years ago, but I'm not really an expert and I tend to write really simple verses, which is fine because I'd like it to be in my voice.

But I'd thought I'd ask for help because I get stuck a lot and I just don't know what to say or how to make the poem flow well.

I want the poem to be personal about our friendship together while also being very thoughtful. Not too long, just enough to say everything.

If you'd like to help, that'd be great and I'd really appreciate it. :)

Some important points about our friendship: We've known each other since 2nd grade. Our families are close together, too. We were in the same classes together up until my 2nd year of high school where I had to go to a new school that was built closer to my house. We kinda gathered our own different friends and did different activities throughout the years. We've always kept in touch every now and then and have seen each other again a few times to catch up. We live hours apart in different towns so we don't see each other every day.

In school, we loved playing games with our friends and we usually had the same music tastes. We love musicals and some of the same bands. (I can mention specific ones in the poem if it's manageable.)

We had an argument one time, but it was in middle school, so it was just silly. And we recovered over that years later when we actually sat down for one of the first "catch up" sessions and kinda reflected on everything together. We've always really had our own separate lives after high school, but we always manage to catch up with each other at random times.

She's always made me laugh, she's very funny and witty. She's a great people person. I always have fun with her and we've spent many MANY days and nights where we would talk FOREVER. Like, we'll talk so much to each other sometimes and tell stories that we'll forget to eat or go anywhere we were supposed to go because of it! :) (and she's really one of the only people that I can do that with.)

If it helps, she's a Gemini and I'm a Libra. We were born in the same year.

Feel free to ask any questions that might be helpful in writing this. I won't put really deep personal information here, but with your questions or suggestions, I can probably work them into the poem if needed.

Again, I appreciate any help. And I'll make sure I mention to her that I had some help from here because I'd want to be completely honest. Thanks!

Here's what I've started to draft yesterday, just jotting down ideas. Subject to change, of course:

We've known each other for 20 plus years.

That's plenty (?) of time to bring one person cheer!

Here's a testament of our friendship...

(something else here?)

(middle section: relating to our history together? music/friends/school/boys? Here, I want to express just how far we go back, even though we both know how our histories are, but I don't want really want to remind her of bad times or people she didn't get along with. Maybe I should keep it more general? A light poem just about how much we affect one another? I don't know.)

(the way she makes me feel as a friend to her? how she makes me laugh and brings joy to my life, even just for a little while?

how we can talk to each other for hours on end? we never used to be able to sleep as childhood friends? but i don't want to use the same rhyming words the whole time.)

You've known my dad longer than any other friend.

You were there for me and he treasured you well on to the end. (He passed away about ten years ago and she and some of her family were there.)

We both have been lucky to be in (have?) the families we have,

(something here?)

(something else?)

(ending section?:)

When I think of our friendship and all we've been through,

I'm reminded of just how much we stay true.

We are strong for our friends and our family

and we stand up for what matters most for humanity.

I appreciate you for the person you are.

You are always there even when we are apart.

Best friends are forever and that's definitely true for us.

Here's to many more stories to tell and for us to remain courageous. (?)

(or something with the phrase, "whatever comes our way"?)

Thanks! :)

Roses are red,

Hyacinths are purple.

I forgot your birthday.

Get over it!

Oh, yeah, that's perfect! :)

I never claimed to be a poet, but I do have my moments . . .

A Redneck Luv Poem

Collards are green, my dog's named Blue

and I'm so lucky to have a sweet thang like you.

Yore hair is like corn silk a-flapping in the breeze.

Softer than Blue's and without all them fleas.

You move like the bass, which excite me in May.

You ain't got no scales but I luv you anyway.

Yo're as satisfy'n as okra jist a-fry'n in the pan.

Yo're as fragrant as "snuff" right out of the can.

You got some of yore teeth, for which I am proud;

I hold my head high when we're in a crowd.

On special occasions, when you shave under yore arms,

well, I'm in hawg heaven, and awed by yore charms.

Still them fellers at work, they all want to know,

what I did to deserve such a purdy, young doe.

Like a good roll of duct tape yo're there fer yore man,

to patch up life's troubles and fix what you can.

Yo're as strong as a four-wheeler racin' through mud,

yet fragile as that sanger named Naomi Judd.

Yo're as cute as a junebug a-buzzin' overhead.

You ain't mean like those fire ants I found in my bed.

Cut from the best cloth like a plaid flannel shirt,

you spark up my life more than a fresh load of dirt .

When you hold me real tight like a padded gunrack,

my life is complete; ain't nuthin' I lack.

Yore complexion, it's perfection, like the best vinyl sidin',

despite all them years, yore age it keeps hidin'.

And when you get old like a '63 Chevy,

I won't put you on blocks and let grass grow up heavy.

Me 'n' you's like a Moon Pie with a RC cold drank,

we go together like a skunk goes with stank.

And if any feller ever treats you other than nice

I’d be all over ‘em like white on rice.

Some men, they’d buy chocolate for this special day;

They git it at Wal-Mart, it's romantic that way.

Some men would git roses in a big 'ole bouquet

from the cooler at Kroger. "That's impressive," I say.

Some men buy fine diamonds from a flea market booth.

"Diamonds are forever," they explain, suave and couth.

But for this man, honey, these thing jest won't do.

Cause yo’re way too special, you sweet thang you.

I got you a gift, without taste nor odor,

more useful than diamonds . . . it’s a new trollin’ motor!!

With Luv from yore redneck romeo,
Big Bubba!

PS...Can I borrow yore new troll'n motor next weekend, luvy duvy?

Oh my goodness, Gumbo. XD

Who knew you had it in ya. :) Your creativity is quite impressive.

[All the stuff I put in bold are the things I either moved around or added.]

[ I hope this goes well and you end up with a great poem for your friend. Cheers!]

We've known each other for 20 plus years.

Here's a testament of our friendship...

Just a bit of penmanship!

You've known my dad longer than any other friend.

You were there for me and he treasured you well on to the end. (He passed away about ten years ago and she and some of her family were there.)

We both have been lucky to be in the same boat, along for the ride of life,

the families we have are treasured, albeit the occasional strife!

A place in my heart you will always keep,

Even with all those nights we weren't able to sleep!

With you, I feel I have superpowers,

I can talk to you for hours and hours.

Through all the boys, the fun, the songs,

we felt our adventures could do us no wrongs!

We could almost always find something fun to do,

Well, when we couldn't, someone knew what to do!

When I think of our friendship and all we've been through,

I'm reminded of just how much we stay true.

We are strong for our friends and our family

and we stand up for what matters most for humanity.

I appreciate you for the person you are.

Well, I'm only 13, and I don't have much experience writing poems, but that's all I got.

Wow, that's really good! You have great writing skills!

I really love what you added, especially the "penmanship" and "superpowers" and the start of the 4th stanza!

There's definitely some things I want to add like specific activities I enjoyed playing with her and our friends, like bowling and game nights.

I'm glad you helped. It just bugs me when I can't find the right words to say things, so thank you! I'll be sure to tell her you helped! :D

I may post again when I have more, just to see what else you might think or if anyone else has more to add.

Okay, here's what I've got now.

We've known each other for 20 plus years.

That's a whole lot of time to bring one person cheer!

Here is a short testament of our friendship…

Just a bit of penmanship!

Through all the boys, the laughs, and the “sing-out-loud-at-lunchtime” songs,

we were without a care. We could do no wrong!

Bowling, game nights, and birthday parties are some of our favorite events.

Staying up late in restaurants always provides entertainment!

A place in my heart you will always keep,

Even with all those nights we weren't able to sleep!

With you, I feel like I have superpowers,

I can always talk to you for hours and hours.

When I think of our friendship and all we've been through,

and we stand up for what matters most for humanity.

You've known my dad longer than any other one of my friends.

We both have been lucky to have such loving families,

From them, I think like our care for others comes naturally.

I appreciate you for the person you are.

You are always there even when we are apart.

Best friends are forever and that's definitely true for us.

I don't know if you'll like this but here goes nothin' -

When we're together, you always make me smile

You always make me laugh and chuckle for a while

You're my best friend; you've been mine for a long time

And I know that this friendship will last for a lifetime

Since I have been on this Earth

Basically a few years since my birth,

You've stood by me and I've stood by you

And you've cheered me up when I've felt blue

I've come across many people along this quest

And out of all the friends I've met, you're the absolute best

I love and respect you and you mean so much to me

Even when we're both singing together loudly off-key

I know we've been away from each other every now and then

But I'll never leave you, my [something...] friend!

[Something...]

Not too good but eh

That's really good, Grace!

I really like these parts:

You're my best friend; you've been mine for a long time

And I know that this friendship will last for a lifetime

and

I've come across many people along this quest

And out of all the friends I've met, you're the absolute best

So I think I'll definitely incorporate that in the poem! Thanks!

Okay, I think this will be the final draft:

We have known each other for twenty-plus years.

That's a whole lot of time to bring one person cheer!

Here is a short testament of our friendship…

Just a bit of penmanship!

You’ve been my best friend for a very long time.

I know that this friendship will last for a lifetime.

Of all the people that I’ve met, I must confess,

you’re the one lovely lady who is the absolute best!

I appreciate you for the beautiful person you are.

You are always there even when we are apart.

Best friends are forever and that's definitely true for us!

Here's to many more stories to tell and for us to remain courageous!

Tell us how she reacts!

Well, it's been a long time. :) We've had a lot go on, but finally managed to visit my friend.

My mom and I went on a mini-vacation last week and we visited my sister and some long-time friends of ours. I finally gave the poem to my best friend before we left since I wanted to give it to her in person. She started tearing up a little bit and was very touched! There were many hugs. :) She really appreciated it! So, thank you so so so much for helping write it! It really came out beautifully!
